is anyone else going crazy ?? Estrogen nightmare!!

hello,
I am 36 and have had a total hysterectomy 7 weeks ago... I physically feel fine, I am back to work, walking etc. I am taking Climara .50 for 3 weeks now and I have horrible headaches that don't go away but most importantly I am beyond irritable!!I want to clobber everyone around me, I can't stand any noises, kids fooling around etc. My poor 8 year old son is scared of me. Tonight I ripped my patch off.I keep thinking that my body needed progesterone, testosterone and estrogen before my ovaries came out so why do I only need estrogen now. Progesterone has to be needed for more that keeping a uterus healthy.I know our bodies still produce some of these hormones on there own, but I am still giving it way more estrogen than anything else. Do I even need to do any of this, I am starting to think the hotflashes aren't so bad!!I am scared not to take some estrogen because of weight, excess hair etc.I just don't know what to do, I feel freaking crazy!!I wonder if I should have kept my ovaries, risk or not.Is there anyone out there that has gone through this and are there any suggestions???
Thanks
Crazy lady

Dear Goldy:

You are not crazy...I am going through the same thing. I had my surgery 8 weeks ago, I am on vivelle dot, being switched to Estratest because I was feeling very low. I get migraines alot now, and I am sure that I have been short with my 10 year old, and 5 year old. I am hoping that this will all leave out soon, and I will be back to my old self again.

Hang in there, ladies! With your surgeries being so recent, you are still on a hormonal roller coaster and it will take some time for things to settle down. From what I understand, our bodies "store" estrogen, some of us for long periods of time. After surgery, we begin to replace estrogen but not in the levels that our bodies were producing before surgery. So, your body is diving into your "stored" supplies along with what you're replenishing with replacement. Eventually, your stored supply runs out and you probably need to readjust your dosage requirements again.

You're right about our bodies needing all the different hormones and not just estrogen. I was very low on all hormones except estrogen before surgery so when I only replaced estrogen after surgery, I was into real estrogen overload. After I found the estrogen product that seemed right at a dosage that seemed right, then I added progesterone and testosterone creams. I still have times when I have to juggle one of the ingredients or another to stay on balance.

Be sure to read some of the articles from the menu on the left. There are also some very good books full of valuable information suggested in these articles and on this site. One question - has your doctors done any testing of your individual hormone levels to see if you can find one that is too high or too low . . although it might be too early after surgery to get accurate readings.

Hugs to you and hope this helps!

What you are going through is pretty normal for being early in recovery. Perhaps your Climara dose isn't enough. Ripping it off is probably not going to help you at this point, since your body is going from making peak hormone production at your age to practically 0. You might even need a higher dose patch. It takes time for your body to get used to the lowered amount of hormones. The patches may not work for you either, as they didn't for me. Some of us do better on oral meds. It's trial and error for a lot of us. I wouldn't suggest taking that patch off at your stage in the game until you talk to your doctor, because it will very likely cause your symptoms to get worse.

I know exactly how you feel and how frustrating it is for you right now. Hang in there. Things will get better with time. Take it easy and give yourself time to recovery.
