Stupid Question?

I'm scheduled for a TAV + BSO (?) on the 14th but am now considering that maybe I should try to keep one ovary? I know I have to remove the right one as its a cyst "magnet" but I haven't experienced any cysts on the left one that I know of so thinking depending on what the doc sees when she gets in there to try & save the left one. Stupid question is...do you still ovulate & get your period w/ only one ovary? I'm going to call my doc in the morning about this but figured instead of stewing about it all day I would see if anyone on this board knows about this. Thanks!

Stupid Question?

Here are a couple articles that you might find helpful:
Keep Ovaries?
Keep Ovaries? Keep one or both?

You should still ovulate and cycle with one ovary. However, if your complete uterus with cervix is removed, there will be no bleeding as all of the endometrial lining will be removed with the complete uterus. Those who retain their cervix and at least one ovary can experience mini-periods.

Stupid Question?

Thanks, those articles were definately worth reading & I'm anxious to talk w/ the Dr. tomorrow. I have severe endo so my main concern is that I go through this surgery & leave an ovary to find out that I still am battling endo because of it. So much for a mind to absorb & make decision upon

Stupid Question?

I hope your appointment went well with your doctor. Since you do have endo, you do want to carefully consider what is best for you. I have stage IV endo but my doctor and I chose for me to keep both of my ovaries because I was only 25 at the time of my hyst. We felt for my overall health it was best for me. This does mean that my own ovaries provide estrogen for the endo that was left on my bowel walls and any that was missed. This does mean I still deal with endo pain, sometimes more than other. Not everyone who has endo can or should keep their ovaries.

If at all possible, you might want to visit with an endometriosis specialist. They usually are the most skilled at removing the most endo from your body and know the latest treatment options available.

Also, keep in mind that there is no cure for endo, not even the hyst and/or BSO. Having as much endo as possible removed by a very skilled doctor will be the most helpful.

If you will not be able to keep at least one of your ovaries because of the endo, you will want to discuss HRT with a doctor who is knowledgeable about endo. HRT can be very tricky and limited for those with endo.

Many best wishes to you for whatever you decide!
