I went back to work this week...

What a mistake. Not that I over did it or anything, but my logic didn't work out for me. I am a second year teacher and just didn't remember how horrible the students were during state-wide testing!

In Alabama every March high school students are given tests in the following areas: math, science, social studies, reading and language (grammar). They take one test per day.

Now, students have begun to feel they don't have to do anything during testing week but test. We are not supposed to give homework or class tests that week because the students need to concentrate on the graduation exam. If they don't pass it they don't graduate (they may take it several times if needed). I thought since I would not be teaching ALL DAY LONG this week it would be a good week to go back.

I did not have much trouble physically, although I could not open a few of the doors because they were too heavy. I was not as exhausted as I had expected. I actually had the energy to go out after school... a good thing because I needed to!

I had a student call me names and mimic me infront of the class (No, he has not been disciplined yet and this was Tuesday). My blood pressure went through the roof, I almost quit, instead I went out drinking after school. Thank G-d for frozen margaritas.

Physically I was ready but emotionally I was not. Other teachers did have a difficult time this past week also, so it was not just me. But, I do think if I had been on top of my game it would have been better, plus the fact that my students had a substitute for four weeks who they ran over.

Sorry this was so long, I was just going a little nuts. I will certainly make sure that other teachers at my school in the future hear my story and have this done during the summer whenever possible!

Congratulations on daughter.
snow cream--after the second snow--got to get rid of pollution first-- you go out and find clean snow, put in bowl with milk, vanilla, and sugar--the best stuff. My dad would make it for us when we were little.
I totally get you on the dh thing. I guess they are getting tired and frustrated!

Ohio is going through the same thing right now. Seems like our teachers spend all of their time getting the kids ready for this test and after March....????

Onthecouch: You won't remain incognito. They'll know there's something up when you walk very slowly and have to touch your belly every so often. I've always walked at a brisk pace and last night at Cracker Barrel they seated us all the way across the restaurant. I told my husband I hated walking across a room full of people at such a slow pace--like that Tim Conway character!!!

After March my students will sit back and try to coast through... Two to three weeks before the end of the semester they will come up to my desk begging for sympathy and extra credit in an attempt to pass. You would think by now they would have heard that I give NOTHING. You get what you you earn. I currently have 3 classes (we are on the block system) 50 percent of my regular students are failing- refusal to work, and 10 percent of my Honors class is failing. Teaching can be great, but students really need to want to learn. I have so many zeros in my grade book it looks empty!!!

Stress is seriously giving my problems...
