Making payments post hysterectomy (2006) - updated!

Has anyone had a difficult time trying to make payments post-op? My surgery totalled to a little more than $30,000 and my portion is around $2,000. I know that's not a whole lot to owe but I can't afford to pay it all right now. I'm looking to have it paid off in less than 2 years but most of the medical places I owe say that can't accept $10 a month and I need to make payments ranging from $25-50 a month. I owe money to 6 different places and I just can't afford to pay more than $10 month per bill.

I went to the dr and had my surgery within 2 mths of my first visit and didn't have time to save any money. I had a situation at work where it looked like we were going to lose our insurance soon so I went ahead and had my surgery as soon as it could be scheduled. I'm just frustrating. I'm just calling and telling people I can only pay $10 a month and sending that in.

Isn't there a law or something about them accepting what I can pay as long as I send in regular montly payments?

Becky

P.S. I should mention that my income tax return is going to pay off credit cards and other accounts that have mounting interest.

I know here in Oklahoma and I think most states, if you pay as little as $5.00 a month on a bill such as this, legally they cannot turn it over for collection. I had this problem when I had my youngest...couldn't afford a whole lot for a payment, but I paid them $15 a month until that bill was paid off and they never turned it over to collection.

Just do the best you can and don't stress over it! It will all work out for you, have faith!

Thank you, Wickedwoman!! I called the hospital yesterday and was told my request for $10 a month would have to go to the review board because they typically do not set up payment plans for less that $25 a month. Maybe I should offer to come clean someone's house?

I believe for medical bills as long as you show good faith each month you can pay them what you can afford until the bill is paid off. They cannot send you to collections or charge interest. I have to pay monies too because of our out of pocket maxium on insurance and I will can only pay what I can afford.

I would just go ahead and send them what you can afford BEFORE it goes to the review board so that they can see you will pay in good faith. Make sure you make a copy of your payment...if you send money order or anything beside a personal check..make sure your account number is on it. That way they can't come back and say they never received the payment. Trust no one that you owe money too!!! Dang, sounds like I'm speaking from experience huh? LOL

keep the payments regular also. don't miss one. once you do they can turn you over to collection. i know because it happened to me once. anyway..keep paying what you can on a regular basis and things should be fine.

take care of yourself,

I understand where your coming from speckla. I too am fighting bill collectors. They can't just send you one bill you have to try to pay 5 or 6 diffrent people, along with your normal bills. I get mad because its not like I wanted the surgery, I would have loved to have kids and all. It wasn't by choice, they act like I had a boob job or plastic surgery. Just hang in there, things will work out.

I agree with everyone else, as long as you've made the first move showing your willingness to work something out and make payments on time (or even early, if possible), they should have no problems with this. Another thing I'd like to mention, whenever you speak with them over the phone, keep a record of who you spoke with and exactly when. That way if there's any question of a conversation, you can say "I spoke with ____ on this day at this time and this is what we discussed and agreed to, ________!" Sometimes, phone calls are recorded or kept track of on computer, but just in case, cover your tracks and keep records for yourself. The same goes with any letters and/or e-mails. Save everything!!!

I'll be needing to make payment arrangements, too, as soon as my insurance company is done with their end of things and I get the final bill. OOOoohhh, I can't wait!
