I had my total hysterectomy Feb 21, 2007. It's been a little over a week and I was climbing the walls. My husband took me out yesterday on several errands bringing me home to rest a bit between them. It was so nice to get out. I'm worried I over did it. Last night we traveled 45 miles to my son's college band concert. When I got out of the car I got a sharp pain in my right side. I didn't know what it was. I stood there and tried to straighten up and I walked a little. It got better. I had another sharp pain once we got back home and then again this morning in bed. I'm a little scared. I'm not sure if I did something stupid or if it's just a stitch poking. I did open and close the car door myself and had to open a few bathroom doors. I really thought I was doing ok. I did also where a pair of heals but they are actually more comfortable than my other shoes to walk in and they are very each to walk in (large square heal). I'm wondering if I should call the doctor. I was just so bored I needed to get out.

Hi everyone, sending good energies and prayers your way for a healthy and safe recovery. It's now 8 days LAVH post-op for me. I had trouble with BM's on the first few days home from the hospital, now it seems I just have problems with the gas. I am scared to take Immodium to stop the runs because I don't want to be straining, but my butt is getting sore (sorry for the graphic description). My belly is itchy, and I can feel things healing inside me. One of my incisions felt a little puffy and was weeping, so I went to see the NP at my doctors office. She said it all looked healthy, and that I should keep after it by cleaning the incisions with a 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water.

Did the doctor bend me into a pretzel and then rub my butt with sand paper? Physically I feel very sore still on my right side around on my waist, and my right low back has been extremely achey. I take the Vicodin mostly to help deal with that pain, and not the abdominal pain which is minimal unless I am going to the bathroom. My butt has this fine layer of grazing all over it which has got me stumped? Anyone have butt gravel rash?

The best part of all this is I have lost 12 pounds. I am a "big boned" person, so I am happy about the weight loss. I have my Mum helping me by doing little bits of grocery shopping here and there. She has been doing the driving. I can't wait till I feel well enough to be able to drive myself. My BF has been coming over, bringing me food, taking me on short night drives, and has been cleaning my cat boxes. Both of them have been my angels. I appreciate the help they have given me. Just going out to the store yesterday with Mum for 15 mins left me so drained I slept most of the afternoon.

It is so great to read how all of you are recovering. Thank you for sharing.

Cheers,

Laurie Beth

I had my first little outing today! I got up, took a shower and then my DH took me to breakfast. Thank goodness for low rise jeans...I got them on with no problem. I was a little nauseous in the car and it was uncomfortable (not painful) to sit up straight that long. I did have to unbutton my jeans once I was sitting down since there was a little pressure on one of my incisions (I have 5...laparoscopic) Back home now with ice packs on my swelly belly but overall I'd say it was a successful outing. I can't believe it hasn't even been a week yet and I can already get out of the house.

I am looking forward to my follow up appointment on Wednesday to see if I can do some light exercise (like just walking on a treadmill) I'm afraid if I can't I'll never be able to sleep! I may also ask about an Rx for Ambien or Lunesta just to make sure I have something in case I do have trouble sleeping once I am completely off the pain meds. I've still been taking them at night but mainly just acetaminophen and ibuprofen during the day now.

"Did the doctor bend me into a pretzel and then rub my butt with sand paper?"

It's really interesting to see that some docs were much more free with the prescriptions than others. I had about 5 days of pain meds and then was told to take advil. I think another 3 days would have been helpful for me. I think I will actually tell the doc that when I go in for my four week follow up. Why leave someone in pain?? When I called the nurses just told me to take four advil at a time...

It is so good to read about everyones progress. Even though everyone is at completely different levels it helps me to know how everyone is doing. It is so easy to get frustrated.

I was taking this "healing drink" that I read about in the rapid recovery book. The book really talks it up so I did it for the recommended time pre op and have tried a few times post op. But the green food extract is the most nasty thing in the world and I actually gagged and spewed it yesterday
so I am going to send dh to the health food store to see if I can get it in capsule form.

I did get the smooth move tea someone recommended. It has worked really well for me! so Thanks!

Feeling Better after TAH on 2/21

I had my TAH (ovaries were kept) on 2/21. I ended up staying in the hospital until Saturday morning (doctor overly cautious about past surgery problems). Saturday, Sunday, and Monday went very well and even went outside on Monday for a short walk. Monday night however, I ended up with a fever that wouldn't go away and had to go to the ER. They determined that there was a minor infection (bladder) and gave me antibiotics. For the next couple of days I was nauseous, tired, and frustrated. Yesterday and today have been so much better and am hoping that this progress will continue. I tell most people that my pain is minimum but so is my energy level. I am taking all my "sisters" advice and am taking it easy - short walks then rest. Hopefully I won't go completely stir-crazy.

Thanks for all the advice and words of wisdom from this site!!

Glad to be home

Well it has been a week and some odd days since my surgery and I am feeling better. My stomach still has a good bit of pain especially in the mornings and late evenings. My Question is , I am still bleeding is that normal? My doctor says I could have disrupted some stiches but I haven't been doing much of anything.

Hi
I am still bleeding but it says in the leaflet from the hospital that it can last for 3-4weeks. I have not done anything i shouldnt have I think it perhaps is just part of the healing process.

Good Morning All, I am feeling AWESOME. It frightens me somewhat because I keep waiting for a complication. I had a TVH/BSO on 2/19 and did a good job of resting for the first week. Last week I ventured out to get a cut/color and get a manicure/pedicure. That felt great! I have been taking Airborne and Emergen-C every day and it seems to help a lot. Between the two I am getting 3,000mg of Vitamin C, which seems to help in the healing. I am finally starting to have regular BM's. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow and hope to get back to work on Tuesday, the 6th, which is 2 weeks post-op. Woo hoo!

I have to second the recommendation on the Emergen-C drink. And it's even an easy one to do (tastes good!).
