Health Advocate Resource

Wanted to share a resource that I was introduced to this last week. One day my insurance company (HMO) calls me to ask if I'd like to meet with a health professional who would serve as a resource and advocate in my ongoing health care needs. I met with two registered nurses for nearly 2 hours in my home to review my current condition, identify resources I might not be aware of, offer suggestions for improving quality of life issues, etc. It was a great resource and I'll be talking with my RN case manager each week until we mutually decide that the service is no longer necessary. This service is completely free from my HMO, they gave me a LIVESTRONG binder to track my care, symptoms, etc, and could be a real help for others in our cc forum. I wish I had known about them earlier in my treatment.

Our HMO offers a support resource for asthma patients but I've not heard of one for other concerns. It sounds like a great benefit to you and the nurses seem to be very helpful. I think it is great when insurance focuses on preventive care and coordinating optimal solutions for better health. Really they are the beneficiaries cost wise.

my insurance only has special services for pregnant people/people with newborns, asthma, and diabetes.
