stupid things people say...

it never ceases to amaze me, the number of people, especially women, that think you can still get pregnant without a uterus. yesterday, i had a trainee sitting with me in my job. she saw the pictures of my nieces and nephew and assumed that they were my children. i said, no, we don't have our own children and that was it. about 10 minutes later, she said oh, so you don't want your own children? i said i always did, but i needed a hysterectomy. so then she says oh, you must be in menopause then. i said no, i still have my ovaries. dr left them in but removed the uterus and cervix. so finally she asks, well, if you still have your ovaries, there's still no way you can get pregnant ?????
HELLO, I DON'T HAVE A PLACE TO CARRY A BABY. THE BABY GROWS IN THE UTERUS, WHICH I AM MISSING.... oh, i couldn't believe it. i felt like asking her if she knew what part of her body her daughter grew in. GRRRRRRRR

From a 28 yr old female coworker before surgery:
"Why are you so worried? You'll be fine! It's really no different than a c-section and I've had three of those!"

From a 46 yr old male coworker before surgery:
"Let me ask ya something. My wife and I were talking last night and we have a question. If they're goin' in there and takin' sumthin' out, why not just have him take out everything? You don't need those parts anymore. I mean, leaving your ovaries raises your risk of ovary cancer." (Really? Like have testicles raises your risk of testicular cancer???)

From my 48 yr old next door neighbor, female:
Her: "I didn't know you had a hysterectomy"
Me: Yes, I had LSH a few days ago....
<cuts me off>
Her: "You are SOOOO lucky! I had a total abdominal hysterectomy but I was up and around in less than week. Even went to a Magic game the week I came home from the hospital. <She continued talking for about ten minutes but I don't remember the rest. This is the reason she wasn't notified of my upcoming surgery. I didn't want to hear her war stories>

Now I am kind of sorry that I have kept it a secret. I guess reading other's stories is better than having to answer so many questions.

I really think the the poor man whose wife told him they just "screwed it shut" deserves a medal for unconditional love!!

Keep the stories coming. I could spend another hour reading more!!

Hubby: "I dont know why they are leaving the ovaries. They cant detect ovarian cancer easily and since you have cancer now, your probably going to get that too and die before they catch it" Gee thanks honey I wasnt scared enough the last 3 months
Grandma: "Now your husbands going to have to go alone on that trip now. Cant they wait until you get back?" Umm no gram, Im in too much pain NOW to go.
Friend: "I'd make them take the ovaries while they are in there, you dont want to risk a tubal pregnancy. I mean I know you cant get "really pregnant but there is the option of a tubal since the end that was tied off is gone now" Yes, you guessed it, shes a nurse.
Son: "Does this mean I wont have to hear about vagina anymore?" Heheh I guess the past 3 months of cancer and other issues have been alot on him. I simply said..Yes, about mine anyway...lol

After:
Mom: "Oh my god your peeing blue!"
me: Yes mom, they put dyed liquid in my bladder so they would know if thye knicked it while disecting my uterus from the bladderflap"
Mom: Oh my god they nicked it because its coming out blue"
Me: "No mom, it would have came out inside if they had, now its just coming out normally"
Mom: as she is walking toward the foley "This is NOT "normally" Just look at it, it IS blue" as she pulls the bag from the bed and subsequently nearly yanks it out of me.

Hubby- as I am crying due to uncontrollable pain: "Guess what, Heath ledger died while you were in surgery" Like I could care at all at that moment

Son's friend- at 33hr post op- "Hey is your son home?" me"He is in bed, its 11:30pm!" Him: Oh, Whats wrong with you? you sound mad" me: remeber, I just had surgery?" him: Yeah, but that was yesterday, I thought you'd be better by now. My mom said you would be fine once you woke up" Me: well your mom probably didnt mean I would be in no pain or anything, just that the cancer issue would be gone" him: Oh well, she said you would be able to help us move this weekend because when she had her hysterectomy she got up after surgery and came home and packed up the entire house and moved. So will you help us on Saturday" me:Umm no, I am in pain..your moms a fool and you tell her to call me so I can tell her that" him: ok well can you go get your son so I can talk to him?" I hung up

I think a lot of people (who hasnt gone through this - and unfortunatly some who have) feel that no one whould need more than a day to recover.

The lady who works with my husband had the same surgery, with the same doctor as I did exactly 2 months before I did and she DID actually go shopping the next day and was back to work in a week. She had no pain at all she said except for the painful area where they put the injections in (we both ahd vaginal proceedures) So my hubby, his entire office, and even I, expected the same for me. LUCKILY my hubby said this to my doctor as I was screaming (I had a really bad time) and was sternly told "ALL women are different as are all surgeries. I can do the exact same surgery on 100 women and there will be at least 80 different outcomes. YOU will allow her to follow my instructions and YOU will not allow others to tell you she should be better than she is..UNDERSTAND?"
I love my doctor!
All I could think about when I read your post was the old TV show "Everybody Loves Raymond" - you poor thing!!!!!

Has stuck with me to this day.... according to this test, I'm a male, because I don't have a uterus!
My heart broke for you when I read this - of all the ones I've read, this is the absolute worst. I hope you reported her. What did she do when you started crying?

So far the best one has been

My 33 year old male roommate equating my coming procedure with his rhinoplasty, I just looked at him and shook my head and walked away (Oh and he "THINKS" Mom/Maid (and no, no family relation he has just put me in this role) will be back to picking up after him the day after my surgery HEH! I typed up a list of "to do's" for him, emailed them to him and printed them out and taped them to His mirror in his room.

Helps us all to understand why there are so many pregnancies among teenagers - how many thought they couldn't get pregnant the first time, or if you do a certain position, etc..............

After everything sunk into my Boyfriends head he finally asked me: So is this going to take care of all the bleeding and pain you have? I just looked at him and said yes, I am having a hysterectomy that means the bleeding machine is being taken out and the pain will be gone to. I didn't want to say uterus was afraid he would say something stupid again. I just don't think men (and some women, which shouldn't be) don't have no idea how our body really works.

I told my grandma I was having a hysterectomy. She said Where are you having it done? I said at the hospital I work for. She said I thought they didn't do them there. I said no they just won't do surgeries for birth control there (caltholic hospital). She said well isn't that why you are having it done?
