JUst came back from seeing my GP, she said that I had pulled a muscle on my left side and the pain should continue to subside, but everything from the TAH BSO was fine. She also gave me something to help get my energy back.

Hi everyone...I am 5 weeks post op today. I went upstairs today for the first time since surgery. I am walking about a mile a day. I still have pain but not near as much. It seems to be different pain, sometimes burning, stinging, then other times sharp pains. So I guess its all part of the healing process and the hundreds of internal stitches I have that should be dissolving about now. I am frustrated that I can't bend much, my hubby still ties my shoes because it hurts to be bend that long.

I haven't been anywhere in a vehicle except my 2 week post op appt. Tomorrow night if I feel well we will go to bible study...still can't get my jeans on so I have to wear sweat pants. It's an hour roundtrip ride and I won't be driving so I will have my tummy pillow with me because we have so many potholes out in the country.

I am very hesitant about returning to work, my Dr. said I won't be ready till at least 8 weeks and then we'll see from there. My job is very physical, on my feet 12-14 hours, lots of walking, heavy lifting, pulling and pushing. There is no easing into or part time...its all or nothing. In fact, I missed one of my training dates and I have to go to our training center and prove myself before I can go back. It was not a problem before my surgery and I know it won't be in the future but I can't imagine being ready in just 3 weeks.

Emotionally I am doing o.k. Of course some days are better than others and it amazes me how things that never bothered me before all of a sudden upset me. Like going thru the last couple days of mail and seeing all the mothers day ads...all of a sudden I became so weepy...I will never be a mother now. I keep having dreams of being pregnant or my gyno saying he saved some of my eggs and I still have a chance. I am sure it is all part of the emotions that go along with a surgery like this.

I am trying to stay positive and look at all that I have instead of what I don't have. I actually sat down and wrote out a list and when they say count your blessings...well my page was full! I know I could not go in the pain I was in and in fact I couldn't work the month prior to my surgery because it got so bad.

I am looking forward to getting better and better each day. I read all your posts and know some of you have had it much worse...and I pray for you sisters every night. We made it this far....we will make it!

For those of you going back to work soon I hope you are able to take it slow and ease back into it.

Like Wistfuls Dr. said "Even though you might look "normal" to most people, you have just undergone MAJOR surgery. Being tired or feeling overwhelmed is entirely natural".

Thanks everyone for all your input and caring.
You sisters are really the best.

lynnie21,
I am still having very minor spotting at 5 weeks. I will actually go days in between and just when I think it is done I have a little more. it is very annoying but I do see the light at the end of the tunnel I suspect in anouther week it will be done for good. I saw the doctor today and he said it all looks good. Walking doesn't seem to affect the spotting very much for me.

Hi all... it's been a while since I posted... so I thought I'd write to give some unsolicited advice to those of you that have posted experiencing any type of bladder discomfort at/during week 4 and so on.

I went to my first post-op appointment last week (4 weeks after my surgery). I told my doc that my bladder was still feeling "strange" in that when it's full, it hurts (aches really) and that I'm still feeling pressure. While looking up my hospital stay records, she saw that labs that were taken the day after my surgery (because of a temp) - they came back showing "moderate bacteria." The discharging doctor (not my surgeon) missed it... and sent me home with a UTI. In other words, I've had this infection for 30 or so days and now I'm taking twice the normal dose of antibiotics for double the amount of time.

I'm certainly happy to know I'm not/wasn't just being paranoid about all the bladder discomfort and lack of energy and/or recovery time!

My point is that in my opinion, if you're experiencing anything to do with your bladder that doesn't feel normal (to you), I think you should call your doc. It's worth it - even if he/she tells you you're fine.

Those are words of encouragement that I needed to hear. I feel like I am "dancing with the stars" - two steps forward, one step back, cha cha cha. I had a really good day today. I was home by myself for most of the day. Mom had an opportunity to go to the casino and I told her to go for it. My daughter worked from 1-6. So I caught up on clearing off my dining room table from the pile of bills that has been there since before surgery. I just did not have the energy (or the time) to do them as I was running around for pre-op appts and getting food shopping and laundry done. I do not feel I overdid today as I took a break here and there. I did not take any IB or percocet because I did not feel a lot of pain, just the usual twinges here and there. I was so glad to be off of meds.

My niece came over tonight and cooked me dinner. (She also did a lot of small chores that my DD was not doing for me!) DD was supposed to go to a friend's house, but ended up coming home and having dinner with us. Luckily there was enough. I rested again while they went for a drive and then they came back and we had a little dessert.

Most of the day my left breast was hurting underneath. I knew it was the start of a rash, but I did not put anything on it (I usually use udder butter - how ironic!) as I was too busy getting things done while others were gone.

Tonight I took my temp because I have been monitoring it every day to make sure no problems (infection) with incision wound per dr.'s suggestion. It usually runs 97.5 in a.m. to 98 in p.m. Tonight I believe it was 99.8. I was shocked when I saw the 99 so I'm not sure what came after the (.) point. But when my mom changed the bandage she said my wound looked good and that it could be from the rash. So I took Tylenol (unfortunately I had to use medication again) to help the temp come down. Hopefully it will work. I'll take my temp first thing in the a.m. and then monitor it every hour or so to see if I need to go to the dr.

I go to the dr. Fri. It will be my 5 week check up and thanks to Jayhawk referring to no elevator at her job, I thought of a question about going back to work that I need to ask the doc. I type pretty much all day and I know that I will need to get up and move around as I got a little uncomfortable sitting at the table for too long today. But one of my duties is to "pat down" female prisoners (I am a stenographer at a PD) when there is no female officer available. I will ask the dr if he will put that I should not have prisoner contact for a while. I've not had anyone get physical with me yet, but you never know.

I am anxious/apprehensive about going back to work myself. I am afraid the insomnia I have had for the past week or so will not go away by then. I also don't want to come home so tired that I have to nap and that will also add to the sleepless nights.

I have not tried on any work clothes (Before I started there the stenos had to wear uniforms complete with a belt. Luckily we now wear the usual office fashions.), but my jeans have been fitting. They are just a little snug so I've mostly been in pj's and wear jeans only when I have had to go to the dr.

I guess that's all for now. Glad to hear everyone is doing well. If you get to feeling down as most of us will at one point or another, just remember Upon Wings' quote, "We made it this far....we will make it!"

Lynnie - Welcome. I'm glad you found this website. It is the best one on the internet!
