I was very anemic going into surgery but did not want any blood unless I was in big trouble. I only lost 100 cc's during surgery and everything went well.
After surgery I was put on Chromagen Forte iron capsules. From what I understand they are the best and are not hard on your stomach. I have had no problems with constipation or anything (I take 2 daily). The only drawback is that they are expensive ($70 for 60) and are not covered by insurance. But I guess I am worth it. :dance2:

Went to see my gyn/onc yesterday. My ct scan was back. There was nothing there. Everything was fine. But because I had cells in the wash he wants to go ahead with 6 rounds of chemo at 3 week intervals. Need to have a port put in next month.

flwrpwr1130,

I wanted to donate my own blood about 4 months before the surgery but my dr. told me I couldn't because it was too low and it would take my body too long to make it up before the surgery. Then I lost a lot of blood during the surgery. So I still continue to take iron pills. I was given a stool softener each day while I was in the hospital but it didn't help at all. Then when I came home from the hospital I bought some to keep on hand. Only now the stool softener works too good. So I'm caught in the middle. I just take the iron now. I just get so tired. I'm sitting here and all I want to do is fall asleep. I did have a busy day yesterday. I don't know if that is it or not. I'm a little past 4 weeks post op now and my stomach is starting to feel good. I go back to my dr. for another recheck on June 7th. I still have the stitches in. I don't know if she is going to take them out or if they dissolve. Thanks for the tip, though.

Robin,
My pharmacist said it woudl take a bit of experimentation to find the right dose/combination of dose times to find out how much colase was the right amount. So I have tried the softener several different times of day and dose amounts. It seems to work best when I do sort of an every-other day thing where one day I take one with breakfast and one with supper and the next day with supper only. It did work just a little too good otherwise. I would ask your pharmacist or Dr for sure though, I was told that trouble BM's could cause a lot more pain and maybe slow down healing, and I definitely do not want that.

I just got back from a Dr app. and he said as long as I don't lift ANYTHING with my stomach and if I crouch or stoop down it has to be with my legs, but otherwise I can start doing what I feel up to. That is such a relief. I have this weird sagging thing going on just above my incision, getting bigger all the time and I was worried my insides were moving but he says it is just the stretched out skin that is sagging down and looking like my insides are migrating. That was a releif as well but I guess I will have a little sag pouch forever now. A small price to pay for the relief from the pre-surgery symptoms I guess.
Do you have outside stitches? I had staples and they came out 5 days after surgery, the rest is disolvable stitches and there are none outside, I am sure still a lot inside. Keep plugging along, I am sure you will feel better soon.

Hi Jane,

Did your Doc say it will remain like that? The sagging skin over the incision. I had staples too and have that "hot dog" like rib right over the incision but was thinking as time goes on that hotdog would shrink.

Just wondering ;-)

Jane,

I'll have to try taking the softener every other day and see if that makes a difference. In the hospital they were giving them to me every day and I still didn't have to go to the ladies room. I was also given a Rx for iron, but I bought the over the counter iron that is slow released. The kind that I got from the pharmacist bothered my stomach. Made me feel sick even when I had eaten first.

I've been lifting things for a while. I know I should have waited to get the ok from the dr. But I never pick up anything heavy. As time goes by, maybe where your incision sags it might tighten up. I was lucky in that as far as I can tell, my incision is healing nicely. When I touch the scar going across my stomach I can feel the outside stitches. I can't see them, they are too tiny, but I can feel them. I also had staples but the dr. took those out the day I was discharged from the hospital. And I go back to the dr. on June 7th. I don't know if it's to take tese stitches out or just to make sure everything is ok. I know I have to have a pap smear that day because they couldn't take out my cervix. Too many adhesions. I'm not looking forward to that at all. I had my surgery 2 days before you and my stomach is still sore. It takes time. More and more it is feeling normal, though. I can feel the circulation coming back where they cut my stomach. I heard that it can take up to 8 weeks and beyond for the inside stitches and our incisions to heal. The one thing that is difficult is that I like to sleep on my stomach. Then the next day it is sore. I'm going to keep the abdominal wrap that the hospital put on me. I'll never know when I'll need it.

You keep plugging along too. Just think. Next year at this time, this will have all been just a memory. Well, hopefully.

Ladies,
Sorry but I think we will have this sag forever. I asked specifically if it would shrink and he said a definite maybe but not all the way. There will always be some sag. I guess that eliminates the thong bathing suit but otherwise I don't think it will be too much of a problem. My sag is quite low, just over the pubic hair so I can probably hide it, except from DH, but he is so wonderful I think he won't care.

It is head up to the cabin weekend around here and we are going yp to N WI. It will be refreshing to have some company, we are meeting my DH's cousin and his wife and son. Maybe DH's aunt too. I was thinking this morning that we get so many well-wishers and guests the first week home, when we are so doped up we can't hold onto a conversation, but now, when we feel a little better and the drug haze has lifted we find ourselves sitting alone every day. I am so glad I found you guys. It is wonderful to have some company during the day. Plus we have a lot of common ground here, don't we? haha. And your advice and sympathy have been very welcome. Thanks ladies for all the help. I will be back on Monday.

The road to recovery is slow but sure.

I guess I was lucky. I don't have any sagging. In fact I look better than I did before and I dropped 10lbs.

I had stretch marks after having my kids and I think some of my sagging is that extra stretched skin. But there is also some swelly belly and that makes it look worse.
I hope exercise will help. My rear has also become more "saggy" since the surgery. It needs some lift too.

Well, all these "little" problems are nothing compared to all the problems I had before the surgery. I am so glad I had the surgery. I was sick of bleeding all the time.
