Bladder Spasms

OK, this my sound stupid, but what does a bladder spasm feel like? I know I had a lot of trouble right after TAH, but there was so much pain, how would I know? What do they feel like to you? Pain in the lower abdomen or something else? I just assumed the pain was surgical healing! I am confused!!
Thanks in advance!

Bladder Spasms

I had bladder spasms. I had my surgery the same day you did. I didn't know that spasms were what I was feeling. I had more of a "leakage" problem and had to go to the bathroom ALOT. I just thought the leaking and frequent bathroom trips were another symptom until my doc's nurse called to check up on me a few days after I got home. I told her what was going on and she said spasms happen sometimes when you've had a catheter in. She called me in a prescription called Pyridium. I was told it helps to empty your bladder completely so your spasms slow down. A warning about this stuff though...it causes your urine to turn bright orange. Very strange.
Anyway, I took it for a couple of days and the leakage and frequent bathroom trips stopped. I am like you-I don't know if some of the pain I felt were spasms or surgical pains. I think the way it's diagnosed for sure is the symptoms of not making it to the bathroom and having to go alot.
If you're having problems w/your bladder you should call your doc. Apparently, this is a common side effect of catheters and abdominal surgeries and they can certainly give you something to help.
I hope I answered your question! Good Luck!!

Bladder Spasms

I told my dr. I was up every 2 hrs. going to the bathroom. He said it could be bladder spasms due to having my bladder slung up and just having it moved around in general during surgery. He also said the catheter experience could contribute.
I asked him what a spasm was as I wasn't experiencing any pain. {I thought a spasm meant there would be pain}. He said no, not in everyone...it's just the reaction of my bladder due to the above mentioned stuff. So...as far as I know, the frequent use of the BR means my bladder is having spasms. I'm doing much better now... thank God!

Bladder Spasms

I'm glad to hear your doing better. It's so irritating to feel like all you do is go to the bathroom. With me, it never fails. As soon as I find that one really comfortable position my eyes pop open because I suddenly realize I have to get up--AGAIN. It's very frustrating. My leaking problem has stopped, but frequent trips hit me again last night. I swear, I think I was up every 45 minutes! I hate to take anymore meds than I am already, but if that happens again tonight I'm going to take that spasm medicine again.
