Small bowel obstruction

I haven't visited this site in quite a while since everything was going great after my hysterectomy in March '06. I was so happy with the outcome of the surgery.
This pass week however, has not been so great. I had to be rushed to the emergency room with severe ab pain and vomiting. It turns out I developed scar tissue that caused a small bowel obstruction and I was rushed into surgery on Thursday night. I am home now and recovering once again (14 months after my first surgery).
Have any of you ladies expericence this after hysterectomy? Did I do something wrong to develope the scar tissue? Can I expect more bowel obstructions in the future? I intend to discuss all of this with my Dr. and am working on my list of questions but would really appreciate any input from you ladies.

I moved your question here to a forum where others have experienced similar things. Adhesions are an icky thing that no one can predict. Check with your doctor with all your questions. There are doctors who specialize in adhesions...so if you don't get the answers from your regular doctor, it might be worth consulting with a specialist. I'm sending gentle hugs!

I am sorry you had to have another surgery! Did you have surgery with your GYN or another specialist? You may want to make a list of questions to ask whomever did your surgery as they will be the most aware of exactly what happened and what might happen in the future. S/he may also have some tips to help prevent future issues.

We have some Adhesion Resources you may want to read through to learn more about adhesions.

Many best wishes to you! I hope your recovery goes well!

Small bowel obstruction

I'm sorry you had to have another surgery. Unfortunately adhesions can be quite common following surgery. One does not even have to have surgery to develop adhesions. Adhesions are the body's natural defense mechanism. When I was reading my surgical report after my first surgery it said "dense adhesions, probably from a previous female surgery." Well, I had never had a previous surgery in that area. I had, however, been very ill with pneumonia and a kidney infection. Adhesions don't always cause pain, it is where they form and if they attach itself to any organs, such as yours did, that can cause problems.

I hope you will feel much better once you recover from this surgery.

I had a surgical specialist do the bowel obstruction surgery. I didn't have much of a choice since it was an emergency surgery but it turns out that I really like the surgeon. I will definitely look into the adhersions resources. Thanks for your input.
