Young Children

I am having a radical TAH on July 6. My DH is a teacher so he is able to be home with me for 7 weeks after the surgery. I also have a 2 year old daughter, who loves to be held, cuddled and picked up. I am not sure how to handle her wanting to be picked up and held while I am recovering. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this?

Hi Kathy Welcome to Hyster Sisters. I'm so happy you've found us!!!

I think it is great that your DH will be there to help during the whole time of your recovery: not all sisters are that lucky

My children were older than your DD when I had my hyst: my youngest was 5 yo. Still, she does enjoy to be picked up and it was hard for her to not be able to be carried by mom for such a long time - I had extra lifting restrictions, due to the rectocele repair.

One thing that helped remind my DD that I was recovering, was carrying my tummy pillow along: this was a visual reminder that mommy still had a big owie. The pillow was also useful to cradle my recovering tummy and protect it from my daughter and big kitty cat.

If you haven't done so yet, we have a really great Tummy Pillow/Tote Bag available in the Hyster Sisters Store .

Wishing you the best of luck.

Hi...my daughter is also five...but loves to be cuddled and picked up. I had my surgery 3/5, and I still haven't lifted her! (45 lbs!)

The best defense may be a good offense. If you carry around your tummy pillow, she'll get used to the idea that you have a pain on your tummy. When she wants a cuddle, sit down, and have her cuddle up with you on the chair, couch, bed, etc. Everytime she wants to be picked up, sit down low so she can get to you. That helped me alot.

It's great that you'll have such good help...extra carrying from Daddy may help, too! We've had many good posts about little children and surgery....maybe try searching "children" or some such on the search engine.

Good luck with the little one!

Karen
