Just found out

Hello Sisters,
I just joined your site today and I already feel like I'm not alone.

I'm 39 and I just found out from my doc last Tuesday that I have a very large fibroid in my uterus. He recommends a VH, leaving my ovaries, or if I plan more children he can remove only the fibroid (Laparoscopically). It is likely the fibroid will grow back and I'll have to go through the surgery again. I don't really want more children but I'm not so sure I want my uterus removed either. I was not expecting anything like this, I've always been healthy until now. How will I feel? I'm very nervous about the surgery but even more so about the recovery. My visit to the castle has been set for July 19 so I have very little time to ponder this decision. I'm still in a state of shock and very down-in-the-dumps because I never saw this coming.

If anyone has any advise it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and Welcome!

I don't think any of us are ever ready to hear that we need this surgery! I had my TAH/BSO in March, and I have never felt better. I was terrified, but it was an uneventful surgery and the recovery was slow but sure.

I'm so glad you found us....this is the best place in the world to prepare for what's ahead! Please read our Pull Down Menus on the home page...lots of great info to get yourself, your family, and your home ready for surgery and recovery.

Keep reading and posting and you'll be amazed at how fast you get into the swing of things. Keep track of all your questions and discuss everything with your doctor, and you'll come to the right decisions for you!

Hang in there and we'll all be here to help!

I know it is hard hearing that you need surgery. Even though I figured it was coming I was still a little shocked. My surgery is for September so I still have a long wait. That is the hard part, but then again I get my summer.

Good luck and I hope that you feel better soon.

Hi and Welcome Mida I think all of us were pretty much in shock when the final word "Hysterectomy" was said to us. I, as many of the women on this site will tell you, tried every other option and found no relief. I had my hyst, 4 months ago today. I feel better than I had in years. It take 5-6 weeks to really feel like yourself again and even then you still have to take it easier than you normally would. Even at 16 weeks if I really do to much, I can tell I am still healing inside. But looking back, it was the best move I could have made.
You should read everything in this site. It has to be your decision and a decision that you can be happy with. I know for me, my life is no longer being run by my periods. Everything I did had to be planned around them. Read the posts here, make a list of questions and don't be afraid to ask your doctor about any concerns you might have or to post here with any questions that you might think about. No question is silly. One of the sisters says that the only dumb question in the one you won't ask, and you will find that to be true on this web site. Good luck on your decision. And if you choose to have the hyst, you will be glad you don't have much time to dwell on it. As you read here, once you've decided to go ahead and have a hyst, you will find that the ladies all say the waiting is the worst part.
