Dilemma- OT kind of

My 86 year old dad in FL is not doing well. He has deteriorated the last several weeks, and now has pneumonia, congestive heart failure, in addition to COPD(chronic lung disease) They have ordered 24 hour around the clock oxygen, nebulizer meds, additional meds, etc.
He has a lady friend that lives with him and she is overwhelmed by all of this. My DS lives about 20 minutes away, but has 3 kids to take care of and ends up taking him to appt. and oversees him. I am the medical person in the family and everyone looks towards me for support. Since I'm 1 week post op, I can't just take off and go to FL and everyone understands that. But I am feeling very guilty and feel I should be there to help. I had spoken to my Dr. briefly about it, and he said after my 3 week appt. I could consider taking a vacation. I feel great, except for sitting too long bothers me and I'm wiped out. The flying would be the worst part. Part of me wants to get on a plane today, but then I think I don't want to mess up this surgery, especially since there might be a little lifting involved.
Has anyone gone on any plane trips after their surgeries?

Oh Jen....I am sorry to hear about your Dad's health problems.
It is so difficult to be so far away when a loved one is ill.

Is there a visiting nurse that could stop in to see your Dad?

Sorry I am not much help.

I am sorry Jen about your Dad's health and how bad you feel. I would be concern about the lifting as well as possible clots from traveling. I haven't had surgery yet so no real experiences of travel so soon after major surgery. Hope you have a very fast recovery time so you can be with your father. I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Take Care and Best Wishes.

Jen, I am sorry about your Dad. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to help.

I had a TVH and can't imagine the ordeal of travelling that early. One thing to consider is that his illness is one that will need care for some time to come. You will be no good to anyone if you cause complications by doing too much too soon. Your insides have hundreds of stitches that need to heal. I travelled 8 weeks after my rectocele repair and the plane ride was very difficult. I would worry about clots and the effects of lifting once you are there.

Could you put off going for awhile by saying you will come later when you are stronger? Are there friends your Dad and his friend could enlist to help out a bit for awhile? Does his insurance pay for in home care that could give the friend a break?

Try and get some recovery behind you. You will be no good to anyone if you doo too much too soon!

Jen, I'm sorry to hear that your Dad is so ill. I know I had a tough time scheduling my surgery as I have a very ill Mom as well.

You are helping your family just by them knowing you are there, can talk on the phone and help make decisions. I can't imagine travelling at this point and I'm sure if you could ask your Dad, he'd say stay where you are and let yourself heal. I agree with kathiem1954 - you won't be any good to anyone if you don't heal.

Perhaps your Dad's Dr. can suggest some outside help of some kind and by staying in touch with your DS, she'll know you are doing what you can.

I feel for you.

Thanks for everyones kind words and reminders that I won't be much help if I don't heal properly. I feel better after talking to him today and his girlfriend. She has everything under control. They said not to even consider coming right now.
Thanks again!
Jen
