Uterus taken out 3 dyas ago-question

I just had an Laparospic Supracervical Hysterectomy on Thursday the 12th of July (3 days ago). I am feeling so wonderful and never became nauseous or was in terrible pain. My uterus was 5 X the normal size and weighed about 1 pound. I am so relieved to have it done and to be honest, the whole experience was at least 3 times better than getting the flu. I am so pleased with my doc and the anesthesiologist. After complete examination of my ovaries, my gyn found no reason to take them out as they were completely healthy from all outside appearaces.

I read somewhere that just removing the uterus does two things, causes the ovaries to have a 40% less chance of becoming cancerous and in 40% of cases, the oaries basicaly "self-destruct." Any experiences or thoughts on this out there? Just having athe uterus removed, have any of you experienced long term problems with having just the uterus removed?

Thank you in advance for all your support!

i'm so glad youre feeling so good
i read alot before my lsh and there were so many different percentages. i found websites that said there was a chance of going through menopause a few years earlier than average and i found some that said there is no proven statistic that early menopause happens when just the uterus is taken out. my surgeon said he has not seen a difference in his patients yet.
mine are working great and i'm so glad i kept them.

Hi Looking_Ahead.

I am so glad that you are doing so well and feeling better so soon! Hugs to you.

My TAH was 6/4/07. I had the dr just remove the cyst from my right ovary and leave the ovaries despite his recommendation of wanting to remove them. He offered me no valid reason, in my opinion, to have them removed . His three reasons were:

#1. I am 46 and in a few (5 or less) years they weren't going to be functioning anymore due to menopause. This made no sense to me. Menopause is a normal course of life.

#2. I had a cyst before on that ovary so it is reoccuring. (Yep... 20 years earlier.) He told me one ovary could do the job for two but there was a possibility from surgery that blood flow could could be interrupted to the remaining ovary. In that case, it would stop functiong.

#3. "Most women that leave their ovaries are back in a year of two having them out anyway. (??)

I didn't want to be thrown into surgical menopause if it was absolutely not a necessary. my ovaries do seem to be slow waking up but I am glad that I kept them.

I had the LSH in 2005, and only my uterus was removed.

I have wondered lately if my ovaries have started shutting down. I started having hot flashes a few weeks ago, and have woke up covered in sweat. I'm also having some hormonal issues that are making me wonder.

I'm having one ovary removed on the 24th, with my cervix, because of scar tissue and pain. However, I'm curious as to what the other ovary looks like. I'm 28, so I really want to hold on to it as long as possible.

Your ovaries don't shut down at menopause -- they gradually slow down their hormone production. That's a huge distinction, in my view. Your ovaries continue to produce hormones even after menopause!

Yes, some women experience ovary failure after hysterectomy. But that doesn't mean the ovaries need to be removed right away.

My roommate in the was a 74-year-old woman who had her uterus removed when she was in her 40's. Her ovaries served her very well for some 30 years after her uterus was removed.

You can always have your ovaries removed later if there's an issue with them. Be proactive and attentive to your health.
