HRT and endometriosis

Hi everyone!

Had my TAH/bso on July 2 and was put on Vivelle right after the surgery. It seems to be working since I am not having any menopausal symtoms. Here's my concern: I suffered from endometriosis and I am now wondering if the combination of that and an all-estrogen hrt will cause me problems. I always thought that endo was fed by estrogen so if there are any implants left, will they begin to grow? I was operated on by a gynecologic oncologist since there is a family history of ovarian cancer but the increased CA125 reading was due to endo. I plan to discuss this with my regular gyn in the near future, but would love some insight.

Thanks for your help.

Best wishes.

Lisa

HRT and endometriosis

Hi Lisa, I had an LSH on July 9 due to severe endometriosis and fibroids. Both ovaries and cervix were taken out and the dr will not put me on HRT just yet in order that if any microscopic endo was left it will have a chance to dry up without the estrogen. I havent had any major menopausal symptoms other than sometimes feeling cold and sometimes I wake up a little sweaty in the mornings but it hasnt interrupted my sleep. I would discuss it with your doctor. why did he start you right away ?

HRT and endometriosis

Dear Phillipians:

He put me on it right away because he feels that noone should have to struggle with post op pain and menopause at the same time. I thought this was temporary so at my 3 week check up I asked him how long do I stay on hrt. He replied "5 years--until you are 50 years old. About 2 years from now the level should be decreased a bit. This will mimic a normal body." When I questioned him about the endo-hrt relationship, he didn't seem phased. I guess not his specialty. When I had a laparatomy for the endo 10 years ago, my doctor then prescribed a 6 month round of Lupron to kill any stray endo cells. This is why I am concerned.

Thanks for your input.

Best wishes.

Its interesting how every doctor is different. I was also on he Lupron shot for 3 months before the surgery. I didnt get the second shot because the pain was getting worse instead of better. The doctor said later on i may benefit from very low dose of estrogen but I'm not on anything right now. Keep us posted. Good luck on the hrt.

I am on a ERT called Estradiol I was given the prescription before I left the hospital and I just started taking it due to hot flashes. I also read the same thing as you and I am going to ask my doctor about that (because of the endro). Can I ask what your dosage is? I am wondering how low did they start you, I am on 1mg.

HRT and endometriosis

I will know better after Tuesday's hyst, but I believe my dr. is planning on giving me HRT that has some kind of progestin as well as estrogen. I don't think he favors unopposed estrogen right away, but would instead wait one year before giving me just estrogen (that is, IF he takes out both my ovaries). I also am on Lupron. I've used up one month now of my 3-month dose, and I am not getting another shot (I'm very thankful that my dr. was not planning on that, either)!

It could be nerve-racking to hear all the different approaches. I do feel confident in the skills of my dr., so I've decided to just try and do what he advises and hope and pray for the best outcome (for all of us, actually!).

Hugs to all !

HRT and endometriosis

Because I have no uterus they don't need to give me progestin only estrogen. But if you keep your uterus then it's a must you have it.

It is really nerve racking but your right, you have to believe in your doctor and google information on the net so your knowledgeable enough to know what's going on.

I also had endo and lost both ovaries.

My Dr. did not start me on HRT until I was 5 days post-op.

He said that the endo remaining would "burn off."

Went on the Vivelle Dot and had been on that since in surgery in Sept. 2005 and just switched to a Femring today.
I felt I was getting too many ups and downs with the dot. Will see how this all pans out.

HRT and endometriosis

I have had no pain what so ever.

And, I have been on the highest dose of Vivelle Dot since I was 5 days post-op. I just switched to a Femring yesterday.

But, I will say, that I did not have pain all the time-prior to my hysterectomy-just during my periods-which were horrendous some months.

Looking back, I had alot of bowel problems during my period which worsened to pain going all the way up into my upper abdomen/stomach area. Once the period was over, so was the pain.

My Dr. has been in practice for many years and is one of the best in the southeast. He has never expressed any concerns about endo returning and on my surgery reports, it was stated that I had significant endo on both ovaries. He told me had he not removed them at the time, they would have had to come out 6 months to a year, at the most after my uterus was removed.

I send a Do not worry too much.
