Fat or sane and happy...Am I going to have to choose????

Please tell me I won't have to make THAT decision. I started Triest/testosterone 4 weeks ago. My estrogen level was really low before. In the last 4 weeks I have gained 7 pounds. This is even with watching my diet very cafefully!

In the last 3 years I have kept my weight to within a couple of pounds (I am 5'6 and stayed at 140-142) Today I am 149!

I was thinking I will just have to stop taking the estrogen (weight is kind of an mild obsession with me) but I am feeling so much better in so many ways. Is there anything to keep a lid on the wieght gain...does it level off?????

My Dr retested my blood Friday as I feel I need a stronger dose. I hate to see what will happen to my wieght at the point!!!

HELP!!!!!

Fat or sane and happy...Am I going to have to choose????

I am having a similar problem with the Vivelle Dot (although I can't say I feel happy and sane on it). Before my hyst I weighed 116 lbs at 5'6" for a number of years. Last year I actually lost a ton of weight and was down to 102 lbs while on Triest but that was probably because I was on a strict anti candida and anti sugar diet for six months (similar to Atkins diet). I had to go off from losing so much weight. I switched to the Vivelle Dot because I was not absorbing any of the compounded hormones I tried (creams, drops, troches). Since being on Vivelle Dot my weight has shot up to 130 lbs and I am always bloated like I am pregnant. I can barely fit into my clothes either and can not even afford to buy new ones.

I wonder in your case if it has something to do with the testosterone? I don't remember ever having a problem with weight gain at all on Triest but then again I was not absorbing it according to my hormone tests. Maybe you are getting too much testosterone? Is this the first time you have been on it? I really don't have any answers for you but I can totally relate! I am interested in responses too! Good luck!

Kathi... "fluffy" is okay if that is what it takes. Remember the tired, whacked out, grumpy, sleepy, b*&^%$ old hag that you were just a few weeks ago? You were ready to kill your boss and your hubby and prison food is far worse for you then chop salad! Sooooooo ((((((((( ))))))))))). Heal your spirit right now and worry about the fluffy a little bit later.

It's an awful dilemma, isn't it? Be happy and heavy, or thin and miserable. I am struggling with weight too, despite strenuous exercise and careful eating habits. I'm only one pound away from my BMI being in the "overweight" category--and I've told my doctor that any more weight gain is a "deal-breaker"--but if I go off of HRT, that may be the end of my sanity (and my marriage!).
Choices, choices, choices....

Fat or sane and happy...Am I going to have to choose????

I am wondering about this lately too. I've just been taking the Premarin since my surgery and I do feel so much better that before the surgery. I think my ovaries had been slowing down before they took them out. So I was having some menopausal symptoms before.

But my doctor hesitated about prescribing it for me because of the risk of breast cancer especially. also, I am having to worry about the fluff too. I am a plus-size anyway, 5'6" and before the surgery I was at about 210 but on my last visit I was up to 215. I don't watch my eating as good as I should, I know! But I just feel so good lately with the Premarin. I've lost ALL of my menopausal symptoms. I feel downright happy and cheerful sometimes.

My doctor said that in a few months, I should maybe try to reduce my dosage by taking just half a pill.... but Wah! I don't want to do that and lose my good feelings! But the scale is going to keep being a battle. How do we figure these things out to do what is best?

Fat or sane and happy...Am I going to have to choose????

Thanks, guys, Chris you are right......it will be baggy striped prison garb for me if I quit taking it so I guess it has to stay.(thanks for the reminder) I am going to start going back to the gym today. Maybe some increase in exercise will help. Alteast I will know I am trying something. I have had a really crazy work schedule and finally gave boss an ultimatim yesterday and will now work almost the same schedule every day. That will help with getting to the gym.

Sadly, I am overly obsessive about weight, live with a DH who gets up every day at 445 am and works out and is even worse than me. I wear a uniform and refuse to order larger pants and feel like a stuffed sausage right now.

I am taking OTC water pills and hope that helps a little. Interesting that in the last 3 nights I have slept through the night with out getting up to pee and for the last year was gettin up atleast 2 times a night. Could all this be water retention?

I had my blood levels redone last Friday. We will see if I have too much or too little of something in a day or so.

In the meantime......guess I will settle for fluffy!!!!

Kathie,
You are still very early in your recovery. It can take the body some time to adjust and adapt. Weight seems to be one of the common complaints early in the game. You may need to give it some more time. Here's two articles about this issue:
Weight and Hrt
Weight and Menopause

FYI, too little estrogen can cause weight gain, so stopping your hrt won't necessarily make the weight drop off.

Fat or sane and happy...Am I going to have to choose????

Thanks so much for the links. It is all so confusing. I had POF at 40 and thought I had been through all of this in my 40's. I took BC pills for about 8 years for hormones. Then at 48 I quit them, did Adkins, lost 25 pounds, got a trainer and got in really good shape. I had hyst at age 52 and at that time I had kept all the weight off but quit going to the gym. I was less tonened but still maintaining. Then I had hyst and 4 months later rectocele repair. I have had NO activity to speak of for a many months and was able to maintain my weivht to within a couple of pounds. I thought because I had already done the menopause thing that when they took my ovaries it would not make a difference. It took me about 2 months to figure out that it was not the 2 surgeries but hormones that were about to ruin my life. I had my levels tested and estrogen was 18, testosterone was low as well.

I have NO plans to quit the HRT.....I really want some quality of life here and am reassured to know that it is something that can occur early on. Rather than just whine and worry I went back tonight and joined the gym. I will do cardio and weight training and hope for the best. I am worried after reading all the ways the different hormones play off each other. My Dr does Bio-indenticals but I get the impression he is not really big on HRT...he said it is not what it is crack up to be. I wish a man could feel for 5 minutes the havoc lack of hormones can wreak!!! SO I have to wonder will he take to time to figure out what is dominate, what is lacking, what is too much????? He is retesting my blood after 4 weeks because I feel I need more.

No wonder they call it a jungle! My head is spinning!!! Thanks for the reassurance. I know it will all work out. I have gotten my first couple of whole night sleep in many, many months. That alone is a huge gift!!!!

Fat or sane and happy...Am I going to have to choose????

have you taken any progesterone? it worked wonders for me. I am 55 post menopausal by two years, and when these fibroids fired up and i got an estradiol level of 15 I bought a tube, started sleeping through the night and felt so much better overall, fiboirds shrunk to toleable size too after a couple two or three weeks....

It is a 14 dollar investment and you can easily just apply less than the 1/4 tsp twice a day it might help to balance you...... just a thought, I am only 4 days post op but my dr doesn't seem to think I will need anything for HRT, he did keep my ovaries in tact says they are still working or I would have NO estradiol!

Fat or sane and happy...Am I going to have to choose????

My progesterone tested in the normal range. Dr did not seem to think I needed any. I should hear today about my labs from last week. I am sure I need to up the dose and am anxious to hear what Dr says.

I am hesitant to add something I might not need and mess up the slow improvement I have going!

Here is hoping your ovaries keep on going and you do well. Please get lots of rest and recover quickly!
