Surgery postponed...

Well I ended up keeping my second opinion appointment (after it being canceled due to the ob/gyn getting called out on an emergency). I thought about canceling but I'm glad now that I didn't. He agreed that I need a hysterectomy and that it can be done vaginally but he thinks my back pain is not related to the fibroids. I had an MRI yesterday and should find out more next week but for now I'm not having surgery right away. Has anyone had some type of cortizone epidural for their back during their hysterectomy? That's what this ob/gyn thinks I'll need due to a disc disease. Any thoughts?

I also have a question regarding a Laproscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy vs. just a Vaginal Hysterectomy. What's the advantage to having the laproscopic assisted part other than being able to see the ovaries better? The 2nd opinion ob/gyn doesn't think I need the laproscopic part done.

Thanks and sorry this is so long!
Penny

Hi Penny,
I had a TAH via epidural with sedation. It was a great option for me and helped with pain management the day of and after surgery. It also helped my bowels return to normal more quickly.

My fibroids were too large to consider LVH or a vaginal (hence the abdominal hyst). You might try searching the post-op forum for the key words to find other posts. Or, check out the resources tab for more information.

Hugs,

Hey, Penny,

I have a herniated disc low on my back...makes my buttbone hurt and sometimes pain shoots down my legs. I have had several of the cortizone-type injections over the past 3 years. They work great! Usually last me about 3 months or so. I started them because I didn't want surgery and did not want to be taking pain pills every day. If your back still hurts after your surgery, find a local "pain doctor" and ask about it...you will be glad you did.

As for the epidural, I am having one as well. Sometimes being immobile can be rough on your disc disease, so they give you the cortizone for inflamation and the epidural helps with the pain the next day. People who don't have disc disease have them done as well. My MIL had one and didn't even need the Morphine pump. Just oral meds after they took the epidural out.

I am glad your second opinion went well. Do you know about when you are planning surgery? Is the first doc or the second doing the surgery?

Hugs, Angie

I'll just add that my doctor didn't think my back pain was related to fibroids either. Until she did the surgery and found the fibroids pressing into my colon and tailbone. I didn't have an MRI ahead of time, so we didn't know the exact position of the fibroids.

I can confirm my lower back pain is gone since surgery! Although I don't have any kind of disc disease.

Your doctors will help you weigh your options.

Hugs to you!

When I had my myomectomy, I had spinal anesthesia for the two proceedures it took to do. Though I have a couple of herniated disks in my back it was not a problem for the anesthesiologists who worked on me, and I was more concerned with other things once I could feel myself again.

Given a choice, I would have it again, versus general anesthetic which I really do not like, but since I do not have a choice, well...

Also, I am having the laproscopically assisted vaginal hystorectomy as well, unless my doctor finds something when she takes a look that warrants an incision. I think it helps with the visualisation, and inspection of the abdominal cavity...
