Enema?!?!

I've had an enema before and they're not painful... they usually use "fleet enemas" which are soft plastic bottles with a curved neck -- somewhat like a disposable douche. They insert it into your rectum (doesn't hurt at all -- it's thin-necked and doesn't go super far up) and slowly squirt the liquid contents of the enema into the colon. You will have a sensation of "being filled" is all I can say about what it feels like to receive one. I laid on my side, I think that's the usual way they give it (?). Anyway, you are instructed to hold the liquid inside you as long as possible (believe me, it's not long!) and then you go to the bathroom pronto.

Hope that helped!! Didn't mean to get all graphic and gross if I did, I'm sorry!

And embarrassing? Eh.. a little. But the folks who give it to you -- remember -- are used to this and do it all the time. It's not their first time! Relax and just know this is what they have to do to make you all better!

FYI: I heard the bowels have to be clean because when the uterus and ovaries and all that good stuff is removed and moved around, etc.. there is a chance they could nick the bowels and if it has any sort of fecal matter in it, that contaminates the whole shooting rink. So that's why they ask that the bowels are empty.

Enema?!?!

Thank you!! i guess it will be quicker than the clean out drink so many talk about! I do think I would like to clean out with my own potty but oh well not in the cards!

Enema?!?!

I was given an enema the morning of my surgery. It was pretty quick - the nurse gave it to me, sent me to the bathroom and it was all over pretty quickly. It was not painful at all. Leslie expained it very well.

Best wishes, I agree that it's not as bad as the bowel prep with the "drink". I've done that too - ugh.

Enema?!?!

Hi yogipooky,

Given the choice of enema or the fleet drink I'd take the enema anyday. Painless, fast acting and doesn't churm the life out of your insides like the drink. Yes not the most pleasant thing to have done but I can't say I've ever enjoyed an internal either. Truly it will be over quicker than an internal.

Goodluck and take care............Karen

Enema?!?!

I chose the drink as I had never given an enema to myself or any other living creature...even though it is simple, I didn't want to 'mess up' (sorry) the night before surgery.

I took the drink at about 8:00 the night before.

NOTHING happened until we got to the Admitting dept....

Then a second time JUST before I was taken to the OR!

Mom had wanted to feed me the night before (soup) so I took the stuff an hour or so later than I should have. Lemon-Ginger. Wasn't too bad!

If a nurse had given me an enema, I would have felt better about it. (They still gross me out though!)

Good luck with everything!

OK...this fat lady can't do the dang enema, so now what?

I just tried to do the enema thing (here at 10:30 at night after I got home from my son's hockey practice) and there is no way! How are us fluffy ladies supposed to be able to get into one of those positions and be able to get the thing in there? I am single and the only person at home is my 15 yr. old son and there is NO way I'm asking for his help. So I guess this is one thing that just ain't gonna happen for me. Should I call my dr. office in the morning or just go to the hospital early and have them do it or what? I was instructed to have one tonight and one in the morning (my surgery is tomorrow at noon).

Enema?!?!

It honestly isn't that difficult. If you are able to wipe yourself after a bowel movement you should be able to give yourself an enema. If you are afraid of discomfort inserting it, simply apply a small amount of vaseline or baby oil to the insert and most importantly RELAX! Unfortunately because my fibroid has formed a close relationship with my bowel, I am becoming well acquainted with this process and it's nowhere near as bad as your imagination has probably made it out to be.
