No Bowel Prep?

Hey ladies,
I have my total abdominal hysterectomy scheduled for next Tues, 8/28. I was reading about others pre op procedures and noticed that the bowel cleansing was part of it. I have not been given any instructions at all for pre op prepping. I was told not to eat or drink after midnight. My surgery is 8 am. I asked the nurse about bowel prep and she said she did not see anythign written down for me to do this.

Have you all had to do a bowel prep? The nurse said it is up to my Dr if he wants me to do this. Ihave a call in today, but have not heard back yet.

Any insight?

Double check with your doctor if you are not sure, but I did not have a bowel prep before my hyst. My instructions were "no food or drink after midnight" on the night before. My diet was not restricted in any way up until midnight so I ate normally and I did not any bowel issues following surgery.

Not all women have to do a bowel prep but it is important to follow your doctors orders for you!

I'd say you are lucky if you don't have to do the BP. I pretty much sat on the toilet the entire night before surgery. I honestly didn't see the point, but my doctor said that she has all her hyster patients do it.

It wasn't the end of the world to do it , just an inconvenience. I'll cross my fingers that you won't have to do it.

I received the same instruction as you. My DR told me just not to eat or drink past midnight. She said there was nothing else I needed to do

My doc said she was going to have me take magnesium citrate the night before and no enema day of. I think every doc has their own preference. Never had mag cit before - am hoping I don't have issues as I've asked for Valium to sleep the night before. Would hate to mess the bed in a drug enhanced sleep!

I had the same concerns prior to my surgery, as my surgeon only required an enema the night before, and I knew I had bowel adhesions, but everything worked out just fine! I even passed gas the same day as my surgery, which was awesome.

If your doc says no prep, then rejoice! LOL.

No bowel prep here. I did a light dinner the night before & had no post-op bowel problems.
