Weaning off Hormones & the rollercoaster of emotions..what can I do?

I had my total Hysto when I was 32. I'm now 37 and they are weaning me off my hormones... Sorry to all around me. I'm feel unlike my self & very quick to go off the handle (and that is either way folks) crying to anger. Not to mention the claustrophobia when I don't have my space, I freak. This is very unlike me & wondering what you all suggest. Look forward to hearing all of your wisdom. Thank you.

Weaning off Hormones & the rollercoaster of emotions..what can I do?

Hi Calolsen!

I'm sorry that you're having so many symptoms as you are being weaned off your hormone therapy. That sounds really miserable! What dose were you using and what dose are you on now? Is there something that has come up with your health that has led your doctor to the decision to wean you off hormone therapy?

You aren't really at an age when natural menopause would occur and even if you were, your ovaries would still produce beneficial hormones. Now that you have no ovaries and your hormone therapy is being reduced, it's no wonder you're not feeling like yourself. I had my surgery when I was 46 and now that I'm 51 I'm still using hormone therapy with no intention of stopping it without good reason. I am careful to have my annual well woman checkup which includes a mammogram, breast exam and pelvic exam with Pap test. My doctor orders any necessary bloodwork and I get a DEXA (bone scan) done about every 2 years. So far all is well and my doctor does not hesitate to write my hormone prescriptions for an additional year.

Maybe your doctor is one who believes that hormones should be used for five years. While it's typical that we use the lowest possible dose to control symptoms, I think that five year "rule" really should not be applied in instances of surgical menopause and especially not for women who aren't even of natural menopause age. Those of us without ovaries aren't like women who still have ovaries which produce necessary hormones.

There are, of course, over the counter non-hormone menopause supplements you could consider using if your doctor is okay with that idea. Do check with your doctor first to be sure they are safe for you.

I mean this in the nicest way out of concern, but if I were you I would not hesitate to get another opinion about the wisdom of weaning off hormone therapy.

Weaning off Hormones & the rollercoaster of emotions..what can I do?

I agree with April. My mother was in her early 30's when she had her TAH/BSO and is still on HRT at age 77. It has kept her bones strong and healthy. My sister was 27 when she had TAH/BSO and is now 49 and still taking HRT. She has no plans to discontinue using it. I think for most of us the benefits far outweight any risks but each individual must decide. You definitely need a 2nd opinion. Good luck!

I agree with April and Bev...unless there's some medical reason I don't see why they're weaning you off. My mother also is still taking them and she's 79.
