13 days post-op (09-18-07)

Surgery went well. On my 10th day of recovery I decided to run a couple of errands (feeling good). Unfortunately, I was out and about too long and ended up having both abdominal and low back pain by the time I got home. The part that made me realize I over did it was that the bleeding increased and changed from brownish red to red.
Currently I'm doing better, have rested all weekend long. I was supposed to return to work today, but couldn't (part-time adminsitrative). Spoke with the on call OB/GYN and was given instructions of what to watch for. So far, so good.
Unfortunately, I've learned the hard way how important it is to listen to your body.

Agree with Lisa

Lisa,
I totally agree with you. I had to leave town, however, to have it done! It really sort of makes me angry that doctors don't know or bother to learn about this to help their patients. I'm so grateful that I read this board, did the research, and simply drove 3.5 hours! It has made worlds of difference. Today is Day 10 and I'm back at work --and I was READY to be back at work! I think what makes me the angriest is that the doctors I saw discouraged me from it rather than just admitting they didn't do it!
I, too, feel for everyone here and I don't say this to make light of the pain you're feeling. I just get angry that you're having to suffer (and that I had to leave town)!
Please feel better soon!

I am 2 weeks post op today. I had a complete open procedure due to the size of the fibroid and the uterus. I am wondering is anyone having extreme pulling of the stomach muscles. I am so sore today and I would think I should feel better.

Lisa and Darlene, Would you please explain what a ablation is? I am sorry it didn't work for you. I am having some good days and some not so good. Yesterday was terrible. Today much better. Do any of you find it that way? You think you are doing much better only to have a real crappy day hurting the next day? I'm wishing you all a good recovery with improvement every day. Special hugs for those that are hurting today.

I just posted the following in another thread but felt it belonged here more:

I talked with my doctor's nurse this am and she told me to "chill." She said I was overdoing it. The hard part is . . . when you were very active before surgery it's so hard to put on the brakes and go from 60mph to zero. I truly felt that I was not over exherting myself but alas my body says otherwise.

On discharge from the hospital my doc told me that I could do anything I wanted "as tolerated," but to lift no more than 20 lbs. Well, "as tolerated" doesn't mean what you are able to tolerate while you're doing something, but rather what your body says the day after you do it. Sure, I can help my DH paint the garage at 5 days post op TLH. I only did it 10-15 min at a time and took some lay down breaks. I felt fine - at the time. The day after I didn't have any back, shoulder or arm stiffness from the activity and assumed that everything inside must be okay too, so I figured it was "activity as tolerated."

I've also been walking about 3 miles a day. That sounds like a lot until you realize that if you go for three walks a day at about a 2mph pace for 30 minutes each walk. Well, that's three miles in a day! Didn't feel like I was stressing myself. Heck I was running 4 miles on the treadmill at 5.5 mph the week before surgery.

It's just so frustrating to be limited in activity. I didn't have any vaginal discharge after surgery until day 10 post op. Now I'm bleeding, because . . . I was over doing it. Now I'm down to one walk a day and I spend the rest of the day in the recliner reading and watching movies. It sucks, big time! So let this be the cautionary tale for ladies like me who can't sit still.

~ jen

Oh yeah, I have my "2 week" post op visit on Friday the 5th. Can't wait to hear what my doc has to say.

Amelia

I have the same surgery date as you do. My surgeon has a sense of humor and handed me my operation dictation. I had quite a lot done because of my extensive endometriosis plus fibroids, plus cysts. Apparently I have quite a few stitches that held me back together. Anyway I am still sore today especially when I try to do too much like walking or driving. If I lay on the couch the whole day like I am supposed to, then I am not as sore. So to answer your question, yes I still feel the muscle pull. My doctor gave an abdominal binder. You just put that around you like a corset. That thing is a pain but it helps immensely when you walk around! Good luck

An ablation is where they go in and basically pour extremely hot water into your uterus basically burning the lining of it. You can not have children after this fact. I had this done and it stopped my bleeding problem, but them 3 years later I developed a large Fibroid on my uterus and cyst on my ovaires resulting in being in constant pain so this is what prompted my TAH/BSO.
Hope this helps.

I agree. I was offered LSH and LAVH myself, but I went with LAVH because I didn't want to keep my cervix. I had another doctor before who had discouraged me from a LSH which she said was done by 'rogue' doctors.
My current doctor said that was not true! That's why I kept her. She was awesome.

I am like you..I was also running 4-5 miles a day every morning before work before all this started. Now it hurts to walk to the mailbox and back, but I do it. I am determined to start running again in due time of course...but my fear is "will anything fall" since they took parts of my insides?
Any thoughts on that one?
