What questions should I ask my doctor before surgery?

I am meeting with my doctor in about 10 days to schedule my hysterectomy, likely for late October-early November. I have endometriosis (and interstitial cystitis) and a ovarian cyst, and I have had numerous laparascopic surgeries. I am 38 years old, not sexually active, and I've never had children.

My doctor is leaning towards a "traditional" hysterectomy (everything out via an abdominal incision) because of the adhesions and scar tissue he expects to encounter. He also says that a laparascopic procedure works better with women who have already had children, because their uteruses have already dropped somewhat.

In any event, I am trying to come up with a list of questions to ask my physician at this meeting. Can anyone help?

What questions should I ask my doctor before surgery?

The two that I asked where:

1) Can I take aspirin prior to surgery (the answer was, "it is best not to two weeks prior to surgery as it is a blood thinner)

2) What about alcohol consumption. (Answer, not an issue for most people...but for me...no alcohol 2 weeks prior, again due to it being a blood thinner...I am in the wine biz, so I consumer more that the average person.)

3) Will I be able to play the piano after surgery? (Ok, ok, I'm fibbing on that one )

What questions should I ask my doctor before surgery?

You can find a good list of questions for your doctor in Pre-Op Checkpoints as well as a lot of great information to help you prepare.

Hope this helps!
