Has anyone had an Abdominal Abcess

Please help, I am really scared. I am scheduled for a CT with contrast first thing tommorow. The doctor suspects a abdominal abcess. I have had a fever of 102 since last Thursday, my surgery was Last Monday. I also haven't been able to eat or drink much because I am so nauseas. I also have the chills to the point I feel like I am freezing to death. The funny thing is that I do not have any real pain in my pelvic area other than the incision. I had a TAH, they took the tubes but were able to repair the ovaries. If I have an abcess does this mean I will have to be operated on again? I hope this is a worst case senerio, since I also have a severe bladder infection. Any information that anyone could provide I would so appreciate.

Has anyone had an Abdominal Abcess

I had an abscess four years ago as a result of a severe diverticulitis attack. My colon actually perforated and abscessed, confining the infection to a relatively small area of my pelvis. I did not have surgery at that time as it would have been too risky to do surgery with all that infection in there. I was treated with a combination of Flagyl and Cipro for a month (well, they tried 10 days first, but that didn't work, so I had to continue with both drugs for a full month). A year later I had another attack and was once again treated with the two antibiotics. After the infection cleared again, I did have surgery to remove not just the abscess but most of my colon. After a very long, difficult recovery, I have not had any further problems in that area.

Let us know what your DR says, OK?

-Linda

Thank you for the info. I am on Cipro too, Did it make you severly dizzy. I can't even function I am so dizzy. They think I have developed a abcess at one of the surgical sites.

You poor thing. You are going through so much I feel for you. I pray that they can treat you without another surgery. Please let us know what the doctor says. You will be in my thoughts.

I didn't get dizzy from the Cipro; I think you should mention this to your DR. It did give me a bad taste in my mouth, plus it made eating a little harder. Cipro can't be taken within an hour or two (check the instructions) of taking Calcium supplements or eating calcium-containing foods (like dairy products), which I found restrictive, especially since my DRs had me on a soft, bland, low-residue (ie low fiber) diet -- and no cheese, ice cream, yogurt, milk, pudding, etc.).

What did the CT scan show? If the symptoms are not improving after several days on Cipro, I would urge you to keep pestering your DR until they find out for sure what is causing it and get you on an effective treatment.

Has anyone had an Abdominal Abcess

Linda I just got back from the hospital after taking the CT. Drinking that contrast and getting the IV contrast was about as much as my stomach could take. They said the would get it to the radiologist to read and text the results to my Doc, since he is on call tonight. They told me not to be suprised if I got a call from the doc telling me to go to the hospital to be admitted. Doesn't sound to good, I hope the tech didn't see something..

I am still so dizzy that I can't eat or drink much, the doc called in a chemo nausau drug to try and get me over it, so far hasn't helped much. I just keep hanging in there, taking one day at a time.... Thankfully my daughter and fiance have really been good, the dizziness and nausau was so bad this morning at 4:00 am that I couln't get to the bathroom, my fiance had to carry me, I feel so stupid.. and helpless, I just pray things get better soon. I really appreciate your sharing of information and encouragment. Jacquie Lynn

Have you heard from your doctor yet? If it is an abcess and they feel like you need to be admitted, even though that is hard you will probably be better off with IV antibiotics. This might help clear it up faster and help you avoid any further surgery.

Sending you some HUG's and I will keep you in my prayers. I hope that you get better news. Take care and keep us posted.

Has anyone had an Abdominal Abcess

I am not sure that I know how to do this, I am KSGal's daughter. She wanted me to check her e-mail and update her Hyster Friends. She was admitted last night for IV antibiotics, she shouldn't be in too long, they just got to get ahold of the infection from a (possible perferation or abcess) and get her eating and drink more. She has been sick to her stomach and dizzy since we brought her home. Hopefully things will get better soon, it is really taking a toll on her. She has always been my rock and it is so hard to see her so sick and hurting. Thank you for all your loving support and prayers. Mom will updated you when she gets home from the hosital which should be in a couple of days.
