Don't laugh-really-belly button ring question

I know...I'm old enough to know better, but about a year ago I got my belly button pierced. (Mid life crisis, maybe, who knows.) Well, now that I've done it and I passed out after getting it pierced, I'll be darned if I'm going to let it close up. It was too much trauma to get it. Anyone out there have one? How did the pierce fair through surgery? How soon were you able to put the ring back in? Did the hole close up before you could put the ring back in? (For those who are wondering, I'm actually QUITE normal!).

Sunni --

It's gonna have to come out, and when it can go back in depends on your rate of healing, scar, doc, etc.

No, I don't think you're looney. I wouldn't do it myself (although I am considering a tatoo), but it's not hurting anybody, so more power to you, gal!

Don't laugh-really-belly button ring question

At my surgery they said ALL jewelry must be removed before you sign in the morning of surgery. So I know you've got to take it out. But I would think you could reinsert it as soon as you get home from the hospital. Seriously, I can't imagine it being a problem. We all put our rings & earrings back in ASAP, what's the difference? It's not a fresh wound, and unless you're having laparascopic surgery where you'll have an incision in your belly button, I can't see any risk. But you might want to check with your doctor just to be sure.

Hi Diane,

If your piercing is not new, the hole shouldn't close up that quickly....especially after 1 year. Just put the ring back in as soon as you get home.

FYI....I was told and knew that all jewelry had to be off before surgery. However, I could not take off my gold chain bracelet. I guess the clasp was bent or stuck, and no matter how hard I tried, it wouldn't open. I even pulled hard enough to break it, but it wouldn't budge! I ended up going to the hospital with it on, fearing I was going to hear some from the nurses! While in pre-op, the nurse was very nice about it and tried it herself. She pulled and twisted and finally gave up when it didn't come off. What she did was wrap and wrap and wrap it in gauze and then taped it up. She marked the outside of it "bracelet" to let the surgeon know what was underneath and I was allowed to go into the OR like that.

The told me the reason they don't want you to wear jewelry into the OR is because they don't want it to conduct any electricity!

Don't laugh-really-belly button ring question

Hi Sunni:

When I went in, and I am red faced to say, I could not get my wedding ring off because of the poundage gained after marriage. Shame on me. But all they did was tape it and it was no problem. I am happy to report though, that since the surgery, my appetite has been that of a normal person! I hope this continues. It is probably because I am nice and happy sitting at home! Back to work on the 23rd though. Uuuggghh!

Best of luck with your surgery.
