What really sucks is I DID prepay what they told me my part of the bill would be ~ Both the doctor and the hospital. That's why I was shocked to get a call from collections!! I thought I was all set.

I could have put off this surgery until we could "afford" it but chose to do it now since we had met our deductable ($2,500) and thought we were covered. I'm very PO'd at my doctors billing department for not telling me they were out of network when I waited 3 months for them to get preapproval from my insurance. Then on top of that, just throwing my case to a collection agency without ever contacting me. I'm furious about the chain of events this has caused me and my family.

My breakdown:

Pre surgery x-ray $44 (Out of network, I had to pay)
Pre surgery labs $154 (Out of network, I had to pay)
Hospital charges $18,943.38 (In network, I paid $1,700 up front)
Anesthesia 1 $800 (Out of network, I had to pay)
Anesthesia 2 $800 (Out of network, I had to pay)
My obgyn for surgery $2,750 (Out of network, I paid $1,000 up front and remainder was sent to collections)
Assistant surgeon $500 (In network, $106.38 sent to collections)
Pathology $350 (Out of network, I had to pay)

My question is ~ how can we use "in network" labs, anesthesia and such if we have no control over who does it? Can you request in network anesthesia? It never crossed my mind! They are chosen by the hospital...

Hospital bills!

That used to be a problem with our insurance. The hospital would assign an anesthesiologist, you weren't given a choice, and you would end up getting slapped with a big bill. I think a lot of people complained. Now, as long as the doctor/surgeon is a PPO doctor, all other doctors, etc. involved in the surgery are paid the PPO rate regardless of whether they are contracted with the insurance or not.

It totally stinks when they surprise you with a bill for more money when you think you've paid it all up front. I paid $209 to my surgeon up front because that's what they estimated my portion would be, then got a bill after surgery because the insurance didn't pay as much as they expected. I can't be too mad at him, however, because they never made me pay the $14,000 the insurance didn't pay on another surgery in May. Technically, I guess I owe him.

I'm scared to check my mailbox. Every day I hold my breath waiting for the bills to arrive and anticipating financial ruin.

Hospital bills!

I am thankful we have insurance through my dh's job. We have had times with no insurance, and during that time I had a miscarriage, and gave birth to both my daughters, my older daughter broke her finger and her wrist, and my younger son broke his arm! Now that we are dealing with cancer in my son, I am thankful for insurance. It isn't perfect, but we only had to pay $3100 out of his $100,000 hospital bill. We reached our max out-of-pocket, so now they pay 100%. The children's hospital is 'out of network' (yeah, it is 4 1/2 hours away), so they have made it 'in network'. If we can't get what we need in our network, they change the network. I hope that makes sense! He does have a $2,000,000 lifetime cap; and that is gonna go fast, but there is nothing I can do about that!! At least it is there for now.

Understand that if we, in the US, get health care like Canada has, our income taxes will go up big time! While I applaud the Canadian system, I know for a fact that the US cannot carry this off. Not only will they tax us up the wazooo...but understand, the population of the US is far greater than that of Canada, so the costs would be far higher.

It is a great dream, but I do not see it happening in our lifetimes.

Judy (Farmer68), why were so many charges outside of your network?

I have a prefered provider plan, so I can basically go to most Dr.s. I feel very fortunate.

My GP sent me to an OB/Gyn within her medical circle. I then had surgery at the main hospital in my plan (there are 5 hospitals in my city in this particular plan). So my out of pocket was just over $1,000 for everything.

My total bill so far is almost 50K!!!! I stayed 3 nights and 4 days at the hospital. I got a separate bill for everything! Luckily I have insurance and my deductible is OK. ICK!

I just hope that my insurance pays way over half or more.

Has any one else got a bill? Did your insurance pay a lot? What was the total cost that you had to pay?

Hospital bills!

Just this morning I found a post from a sister who does HR/ins. work for her co. The only way I can tell you to find it is.. go to forums, then click on pre-op, then it shows up at the top of the page under "Hints for Hysterectomy". The post is by lorrianemalone, and I thougth it had some good information in it, have been through the mill with ins. co. for unrelated things, they'll bleed you dry if you let them.

I have no idea!
I picked this obgyn years ago because she WAS in my network. about 2 years ago, my insurance plan changed, I showed them the new card and they said "no problem, we take ***** insurance too". I assumed that they were in network with the new insurance and I continued to pay my $30 office visit charge like always.

Hard hard lesson learned ~ I guess I should have asked more questions but I am still mad at them for not bringing it up at the pre surgery interview where we were working up charges based on insurance.

Had they sent me a bill, I could have contested it and/or worked something out. The Dr could have re submitted it in a different way or I could have set up a payment plan like they told me I could before the surgery. Since they sent it to collections (they had an incorrect mailing address) they, cleared it out of their system so they can't even send me a bill so I can see the charges ~ they basically washed their hands of it.

Even a bigger insult is the assistant Dr who only charged me $500 WAS in my network. Had I known that in the beginning, I would have had him do the surgery.

I feel very misled and mistreated

You are so very right! I think our taxes are high enough, thank you very much! In a perfect world there wouldn't be these problems. But since we don't live in a perfect world....

Merry Christmas everyone!!
