Hospital bills!

I received my hospital bill about 2 weeks ago. My surgery costs around $20,000. I am responsible for $750.00 of that.

I have read that many times here and in financial planning books. What the hospital is banking on, is that those without insurance will not ask for the reduction.

Also, many who do not have coverage will end up never paying the bill in full...hospitals write-off a TON of unpaid medical bills.
I did go to the financial office, they said I get 5% off for being uninsured, 5% off if I pay balance within 10 days of receipt of bill.
It will go to collections if you don't pay. They will write it off if you can prove no/low income.

Hospital bills!

My problem is that every little thing is billed separate the hospital bill for room was 27,000 I have to pay 3709 for that one lab was 345 have to pay 82 for that another was $6224 I have to pay $697 for that. So far I am responsible for $5,574 and the Dr hasn't submitted a bill for hers yet. I just started sending $25 payments to the hospital they accepted it just said if I missed a payment the total would be demanded in 30 days. I sent $10 payments for the others haven't heard back from them yet. We shall see it will take forever to pay but hey least Im paying.

Guys - it is so expensive there in the US - I don't know how you do it - you have to have insurance.

I received a breakdown from my insurance for EVERYTHING - surgeon, anesthetist, 5 nights in a private room, it was €5,600 which is about $8250 - I paid nothing! We see the surgeon before the hospital date is set and we have to pay for that and then the check up we have to pay for as well which has been approx $370 - that's it!

We have a Public Health system also which is free - the drawback is that you will be waiting for your operation date (and that could be years!) but then the only difference is you do not get your own room - same hospital, same surgeon, same nurses, same food! It's paid for by our income tax.

[color=Blue]I can't believe that you had to stay 5 nights, did you have complications? I went to the hospital and 5:30 am and oper.was at 7:30 am stayed the night and was released the next morning. I begged to be released because the women in the bed next to me SNORED most of the day and all night. I needed my sleep because I was feeling so bad and I asked the nurse to help me walk the same day as my operation.

I wouldn't be with insurance. I would be afraid that the little saving I have could be liquidated in just one major operation.

NO - no complications - here it's a minimum of 5 nights for this procedure! I don't know why! I think it was a good thing - any longer and I would have gone mad but at least you have the follow up care for those few days.

My op was on the Thursday and I didn't see the surgeon until the following Monday morning when he said I could go - if I wanted - that they weren't throwing me out - I could wait until the next day even!

I think we're a bit more relaxed in Ireland - laid back even! Lucky us!

Hospital bills!

I knew I was lucky, now I am finding out just lucky. My problems were discovered during a free "health check" exam thru my county health department that was funded by a research grant on cervical cancer. Once they found the mass I went thru three different clinics trying to diagnose it before ending up in a womens clinic associated with a local catholic hospital. I have no insurance and since I also have no kids or disabilities, was not eligible for any of the traditional types of public assistance. So the nuns that fund the clinic took over. I paid $862 for a SAH, three days in a private room, fantastic surgeons and amazing nursing care ..... and shockingly good food.

Needless to say, there will be no more Pope jokes for me and I have found the recipient of my charitable contributions for the next 20 years.

I really am sorry for those of you who have such high payments to make. Hoping there is some other way to lower your bills.

Hospital bills!

I had my surgery on September 19th and my hospital is wanting the insurance company to get with it. So I called them today and they said that they "just paid it today." huh uh. The bill was $24,000 and I owe $88. I was sooo happy!! Too bad that my urologist bill wasn't paid in full...I'm still paying an over $550 bill to him.

Hope everyone elses insurance does well for you. It really takes a while though for the insurance to pay out!
