Milk and the pre-op diet

Does anyone know why the two days prior to surgery, they have milk on the do not eat list? I am a big cereal fan, and I don't really get why I shouldn't be eating it. I'll ask at the pre-op appointment, but just wondering if anyone else was told the same thing?

I'm not sure, but it might have to do with the fact that milk in the stomach will curdle, and that would then make it a solid rather than a liquid.

That would make sense if you are not doing a bowel prep (start mine in a few hours - ugh! ) I think milk and protein products take longer to digest as well.

I would definitely ask why.

Every surgeon seems to have his/her own preferences that you've got to follow before a hyst. Mine had me do bowel prep (magnesium citrate) but said I could eat or drink anything the day before surgery (but softer foods recommended).

Next week, I'm having a colonoscopy and the day before standards seem, well, more standard there--liquids only and no red or purple liquids.

Catherine is correct. Milk is classified as a solid, not liquid, because of the curdling effect in the stomach and bowels. It also creates more mucus in the stomach and esophagus which is not desired 24 hours prior to surgery.
