Bacterial Vaginal Vaginosis after hyst?

I had my surgery six months ago, and since the surgery I notice I have to urinate all the time. Well, it got really worse, no pain, just having to go, so my dr. took a culture. He told me it came out negative because there was contamination. So, he took a 2nd one. He said that one was negative too. Now he wants me to make an office visit so he can take a swab because he thinks I may have Bacterial Vaginal Vaginosis. I think that is how it's spelled. Well, I know I never caught this from anyone because I haven't been with anyone for a while, neither before or after my surgery. Can someone tell me what this is? My dr. told me there was a lot of bacteria in my urine sample but didn't say if it was good or bad. They just couldn't culture either sample. I'm so tired of having to show drs. every part of my body, but I know I should go to see what he says. I remember years ago my dr. told me I had Vaginosis, but she didn't recommend any treatment so I figured everything was ok. Can someone tell me about this and how to get rid of it. I didn't get this from any guy. The reason I say this is because I read somewhere that it was an STD. Need some help here.

I'm not a medical professional -- need to say that outright.
From what I know, while Vaginosis can be spread through sex, it can also come internally from your own system. No shame in that at all, so I wouldn't be thinking that anyone here is thinking poorly of you.

As for "fixing" it, there are no guarantees, but I can offer a couple recommendations to you. If you have a really good health food store nearby, you can get probiotics in their refrigerated case -- If you can find a liquid product, then all the better (take the maximum recommended daily amount). In addition, drinking cultured dairy products can be helpful - like kefir or yogurt, but best that they be unsweetened and plain.

Good luck to you dear. I hope things improve for you straight away.

Hello Luvs2Quilt! Sorry that your doc hasn't been able to give you a definitive answer just yet, but be persistent! Please try to contact him on Monday and get in as soon as you can. Your health is not something to take chances with and taking remedies without knowing exactly what you have has the potential to do more harm than good.

Hope all turns out well for you and that you and your doctor gets this sorted out quickly!

Bacterial Vaginal Vaginosis after hyst?

i have had this a couple times since my hysterectomy. it can be an std but usually isnt. my dr told me it can be from flucuating hormones and when the ph of the vagina is thrown off. he prescribed metrogel for me but i know there is also an oral antibiotic you can take. he also suggested rePHresh..its something over the counter that helps the ph in your vagina return to normal.
dont worry about the std part..i think this kind of infection is very common after a hysterectomy. good luck at the drs.

It's NOT an STD. Bacterial vaginosis is a different type infection than a yeast infection and does require antibiotics to clear up. (has a fishy-smelling discharge). As dressedupinblue says, the healthy bacteria in your vagina has been overrun with unhealthy stuff. I had it after having an IUD inserted several years ago. There was a day when I thought I had it as well (post op), but that "smell" went away and I think it was just my body cleansing itself. Be assertive with your doctor. It clears up quickly once you get the right medication.
Good luck.

Hi Dina,
That is the strange part. For the last few years I have been taking probiotics every single day. And I eat tons of yogurt. I did have a lot of antibiotics while I was in the hospital. Maybe some of it is a yeast infection. I'm going to call my dr. tomorrow and make an appt. Thanks so much for the help.

Bacterial Vaginal Vaginosis after hyst?

I got a BV infection after my hysterectomy just a couple of weeks ago. I think my original BV infection started a couple of years ago after an annual exam. The speculum hurt and it wasn't 2 or 3 days and I had my first BV. I get them every so often.

I am concerned now, though, because it happened just 2 weeks after my hysterectomy.

I had recurring problems with BV after I had my IUD as well...usually prescribed Flagyl or Metrogel although I think the Flagyl worked better for me. Just like KLJM said...it happens when your PH level in your vagina is "off" or overrun wit unhealthy bacteria.

After my LSH, the doc sent me home with Flagyl to prevent/clear up any BV. It's an antibiotic like the rest.
