Barium Enema???

Hi everyone!

I posted about this a few days ago but didn't get much response. I had a CT scan done 6/21 and it came back normal. Now my surgeon has referred me to a GI dr and has scheduled a Barium Enema for the 19th. I don't really know what this is except that it has to do with "that end". LOL If anyone can give me some information, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Randi

BE

Being an xray tech, I do alot of BE's. It is a simple procedure where an emina tip is incerted inside the rectum. They fill your large intestines with barium and air(for those who are schedule for a BE with air). We make you turn left, right, on your back and stomach to coat everything. While you are doing this the dr will be pressing parts of your intestines. He is trying to smooth things out to get a better look. You should not be in any "pain" but feel a slight discomfort. However, you can start cramping. If you do have pain or cramping let your tech know. There is an injection that can releive your symptoms for a few minutes. Our doctors stands the table you are laying on up and drains the barium out and puts the air in. It is very important to try to hold on to the barium. If you do have an accident, don't worry we clean it up and go on. It can happen. They lay you down and take more spotfilms. When the doctor is done we come back and take more pictures. It is very important to remenber this...drink plenty of liquids. You can end up with constipation (that's a road you do not want to go down to). Always express your concerns with your tech and the Radiologist(he or she will be doing your exam). If you feel you were treated good let the tech know and if you feel you were not also let the tech know.

good luck
