nasty bowel cramping and gas

LSH112: I have been dealing with both loose stools and constipation, trying to find something that works for me......because 2 stool softeners in a day were making them very loose, and constant. I cut down to one a day and now I'm constipated.......so doc told me to try Milk of Magnesia, may help get things more "normal".

ribyra732: My understanding is that the anesthesia shuts down the bowels......then the painkillers can cause constipation anyway. In addition, during the hysterectomy the doctor is working very close to the bowels. In my case, I had a lot of endometriosis on mine, which was removed and caused some trauma to them.......plus I also heard that the gas they use to inflate the abdomen during surgery also gets in there and wreaks havoc.........lots of different stuff going on.

Hope it gets better for us all very very soon!

Christine,

I, too, had the "go too much one day, go not enough the next" the first couple of weeks. I'm now starting week three after surgery and I'm taking Miralax and that seems to have made things a little more calm in there.

Although, I have to say, I'm SO RELIEVED to see that others are experiencing the same bowel pain I am - it's mildly worrisome until you find out that everyone else is having it, too! LOL

Cheers to the "Other Side Gang," may we all make it through this in one piece! Heh.

Hubby made me have some soup. Bless his heart for his help. Today is one week for me and I cant wait for better days. I started to get hot flashes today also and they make me dizzy. Will change the homone patch today also maybe that will help. Well Good Luck all ... Heres to feeling better!!

Am pre-op scheduled Nov. 19th for TAH. The BM problems sound awful. What can I do to prepare? What is the prep the day before? I am only 100 pounds and will be famished by the time this is all over. When can I eat real food post-op? A ny advice????? Thanks, Sandybird

Sandybird,

I had to take 2 bottles of Fleets Phosphosoda the day before surgery and an enema (JOY!) the morning of surgery. No eating or drinking anything after midnight.

Not much you can do to prepare for the bowel issues, comes with the territory I guess. They get traumatized in major surgery and getting them back to normal just takes some time. Some people do fine with the stool softeners, whatever, and others of us are having to tweak things and figure out what works for us.

As far as eating goes......I usually have a healthy appetite. I had to force food down my throat this first week, especially the first 4-5 days -- no appetite whatsoever. It's slowly coming back. I've heard some people mention that they took ensure during those first few days to keep the weight on.

Good Luck to you.

hi sandybird,
Not much you can do to prepare. Just dont eat big you want to be able to have a bm before your surgery. I ate light and they gave me an fleet anyway just before. Just relax dont get to tense the day before you will make it worst I did that. No matter what you will have the gas pain becaudse they put gas in your belly when they operate. you will be able to eat real food a day later but light diet for a couple of days . Good Luck hun .
Im a week today. taken one day at a time.

Sandybird,

I was placed on a "normal" diet right out of surgery. No bowel prep prior, either. Each doc is different, so I recommend you ask him/her, just to ease your mind.
