Can I Be Alone With Pets At 3 Weeks or 5 Weeks Post Op?

Hi Ladies,
I had a LAVH/BSO on Oct 22, and so far, I seem to be recovering well. My husband has been looking at his work commitments between now and the end of the year, and he needs to be out of town for a total of two weeks between now and mid-December. Assuming my recovery continues to go well and I don't develop any problems, should I be able to take care of myself, a cat, and a small-to-medium dog alone for three days and two nights during the week that I'm 3 weeks post op? What do you think about a week alone with the pets when I'm 5 weeks post op? Thanks for any comments or advice.

Take care,
Voyager54

If you have a fenced yard I think you will be ok. I would worry about you in case something happened and you needed to run after one of them..that could really hurt you at this stage!

If you are stocked up well at home with easy to fix meals and still treat yourself VERY gently and the pets are mostly inside I think you should be ok. I would also figure out a way to have bowls/litter boxes off the ground so you don't have to bend so far.

Can I Be Alone With Pets At 3 Weeks or 5 Weeks Post Op?

Hi Voyager! I had an LAVH and was just fine taking care of my 2 cats by the 2nd week. Had to be careful and make sure I had a pillow on my tummy any time I was laying down as they both wanted to come take care of me and I didn't want any misplaced cat feet poking me!

Just be sure you don't try to do any heavy lifting (food bags, litter boxes). Maybe you could have your DH change the litter box before he leaves and then just do the maintenance scooping while he is gone. I also found it helpful to put a measuring cup in the bag of food and the cat litter bag (clean litter) so I could get out just what was needed with the scoops instead of having to lift the whole bag.

With the dog, you should feel up to walking it as long as it is not overly rambunctious, and if you think it might be a problem, are there any friends or neighbors you can ask to help with that?

Be well and try not to worry. Your little furry ones will be fine and they will LOVE the together time with you!!

I have 2 80 pound lap dogs -- and was able to care for them -- their food was in a big trash can container so no lifting any kind of bag --
I had a fenced in back yard -- and they never go further than a hollar will bring them back.

They love to cuddle -- and while i was off they would jump up to cuddle -- just covered my tummy with a pillow.

Animals are smart -- they know when mommy is not feeling good.

Mine are no sad as today is first time in 6 weeks that they had to go out into their dog run for all day as I am back to work.

Thanks for replying to my post, Ladies. Mostly, I'm worried something unpredictable might happen - I guess I'm just feeling extra vulnerable right now. I'm not having any major problems, so I will probably be feeling pretty good at 3 weeks post-op, although I will still be careful not to overdo it.

Take care,
Linda

Well,I say if it is allowed and hubby won't mind ....... get a pet sitter and go with hubby. That way you are a lady of leasure for just a few more weeks . Just in case something unforseen would happen hubby will be there .Even if it is something as simple as needing a hug ! We can get pretty emotionally needy during this time you know !

Take Care

Just be careful. I have 2 dogs one- 80 lb. lab who thinks she is a lap puppy and a sheltie. I had a hard time taking care of them b/c we use a chain and let one go and comeback. THe lab will run after someone or something. She also wants to be on your lap. So just be careful. I am 5 weeks and still am cautious. At 2 weeks it would have been difficult. I agree though- get a pet sitter and go with hubby!!

Thanks for responding to my post, Pattie, VetTech and Speckles. My husband was able to call in a favor and get someone else to do the trip next week. Now he'll be going when I'm 5 weeks post-op. At my 4 week checkup, I think I will ask the doctor if I can go with him. It may not work out, though, because it will be a long road trip. I would like to go if it wouldn't hurt me - I would love to get out of the house and do something different!

Take care,
Linda

Linda ( and ladies )
Your husband sounds great ! While reading your reply I was reminded where I went with my husband at the 2 week mark . He had a big function to attend at a 5 star resort here in WV called The Greenbrier . All expences paid and well of course I wanted to go . Thinking I would just hole up in their wonderful suites,in their soft , thick robes ,etc.,etc. . . . My hubby was receiving an award and of course I wanted to see him get it and take pictures and so on . Here I am @ 2 weeks post-op walking ( in 3 inch heels by the way ) to where I thought was JUST down stairs to dinner ended up being the longest hall . Needless to say I had to leave early . My hubby had to practically hold me up on the walk back . While standing at the elevators my husband was talking to some fellow attorneys and when the elevator came he turns and says ..well fellas' I've got to get her up to the room ! They started snickering and we looked at each other and then while in the elevator it clicked ... they didn"t know I'd just had surgery !!! ( smile ) I'm sure my hubby was the talk of the evening . AND I'm positive he LOVED it !
Hope I made most of you at least smile !
Pattie
