Endometrial Polyp- what are my options?

I had an ultrasound in September which found an endometrial polyp. I have a referral to see my OB-GYN on Nov.12. What kind of questions should I ask- would they consider any kind of alternative treatment to hysterectomy?

I am 45- 3 kids and tubes tied. My periods are regular, very heavy and with some breakthough bleeding.

I really have no strong feelings for or against surgery.

Thanks

Endometrial Polyp- what are my options?

Hi Andrea,
Good luck with your appointment on the 12th. I hope your meeting with your doctor goes well. Isn't a Polypectomy the usual course of treatment for endometrial polyps? I think this can be done in office with a hysteroscope. I'm not aware that polyps require hysterectomy except in special cases. Maybe some of the other women here can shed more light on this. Hope this helps. -- Laura

polyps

I've *sigh* had lots of endometrial polyps removed. Depending on what kind they are, and your doctor's set up, they will often remove them in-office. There are the little wiggly ones on stalks that can usually be twisted or popped right off with a scope. It smarts a bit and there's some cramping but it's not bad, usually Advil-level. Sometimes they let you watch on a screen. It's like a really weird computer game. Then there are the potato-like ones that latch right down to the uterine wall and have to be removed with minor surgery. It's a day thing, in and out. If the polyps cause no problems they will sometimes leave them alone, to see if they'll resolve on their own. Some kinds of polyps have a tendency to come back. They will biopsy them but it's very very rare for polyps to be anything scary by themselves. If the problem is only polyps that's usually it. No one usually talks about hysterectomy based on ordinary polyps....if they constantly recurr or are making you miseerable, they may bring up endometrial ablation - where they destroy the inner lining of the uterus.

Thanks.

From my research on the web, I was unaware of these options. This site is great at easing fears!
