My doc said 6 weeks. I had a TVH. I am not sure if it's the same for TAH though. I would think it is the same.

Same here.... I had TAH/BSO and Dr. said no sex for 6 weeks... (his actual directions were "nothing in the vagina for 6 weeks".)

I'm glad I found that somebody else had the same question. I guess I was in la-la land when the doctor told me how long it would be before intercourse again. I'm 9 days out from TVH (left both ovaries) and hubby and I are both wondering. Thanks for the info.

Hi kazymarie!

You can have sex as soon as your doctor gives you the all-clear, which typically is after the six week checkup. Of course if you don't feel ready at that point, it's perfectly acceptable to wait longer until you do feel ready.

It's important to wait for that clearance for many reasons. Sometimes it's discovered at the six week checkup that healing hasn't progressed enough for intercourse to be safe. Sadly there have been some Sisters who have thought it would be okay not to wait for clearance and found out the hard way that it wasn't a good idea after all. Having sex too soon increases your risk for infection and for tearing the healing tissue. That can set back the amount of time needed to recover.

Some doctors will give the okay for external stimulation (often called "outercourse" on this site). That requires a doctor's clearance as well. My doctor's orders were nothing in the vagina and complete pelvic rest. I got clearance at the six week post-op check but didn't actually resume having sex until closer to 13 weeks post-op. Even then I was still nervous...and so was my husband!

There's a lot of good information to read in these links:

Best wishes for your recovery!

KazyMarie...I didnt follow orders but didnt regret it. me & hubby took our time and was gentle. I did find out that I couldn't have an orgasim until it was about 8 weeks after surgery. And now almost 3 months later some O's are intense and some are little..hope this isnt to much info..
I only posted this to let some know it's not a sin to go at your own pace, that as long as you go gentle and slow and easy...well i'm sure you know the rest.
