ooozing stitches

Hello everyone, I had my surgery about 3 weeks ago. I thought I was doing good. Thanksgiving was my first day out of the house. My stitiches seemed to be doing fine but today I noticed they were oozing and my incision smelled horrible. Is this normal? I don't want to call my doctor prematurely. I'm also scared to death about going back into the hospital. My doctor's appointment isn't until the 3rd of December. Can anyone guide me on what I should do?

Poochie, I didn't have stitches (had Dermabond) but I called my Dr one evening when I thought it was infected--turned out it wasn't, but I'm glad I called anyway. I don't think your stitches oozing & having a bad odor is something I would let slide. I would go ahead and call your Doctor or whoever is on call for him/her. Maybe someone else with stitches could respond to you also.

Let us know how it goes, OK?

Hi Poochie, my TAH was just over 2 weeks ago and I never had any oozing at all or odours coming from it. My doctor used staples to hold it together, 1/2 of them removed before I left the hospital and the other 1/2 1 week later. Even after a nasty evening of vomitting, it broke open a little but closed up the next day with a steri strip. So...I agree with Katie...the oozing and bad odor is more than likely not normal...I would call you doctor..hope it all goes well please let us know....Jo

Well gals, yesterday afternoon I had a rough spell. It felt like a cramp on the left side from my upper rib cage down to the stomach area. My belly button felt sore too (more then usual) I did take a shower yesterday and removed the steri strips as they were practically coming off as it was. I have a little seeping from the navel but not bad. Put some antibiotic ointment and a gauze pad. I also had a non relenting headache. I laid down for about half hour and began to feel somewhat better. Just taking it easy this morning.

Hey Poochie,

I would definitely get in to have your doctor look at those stitches. Oozing and odor could be sign of infection. If it is an infection, the sooner you're treated for it the better. My incision was a little oozy, no smell though, but when I went in to see my doctor, she immediately cultured the area to rule out MRSA and put me on a sulphur antibiotic for 5 days. A week later, the oozing had stopped. Please check with you doctor. Good luck to you.

Is this normal.....or as normal as can be after surgery. Some of you talk about feeling like you insides are falling out.........well I don't know that I would say that but I have very low pain when sitting down and getting up.....when lifting my leg to put my pants. It is a sharp pain that hurts till I have walked a bit. Has anyone else experienced this and should I call my doc. I had a TAH on November 5th......other then that feel great and doing well.

Thanks, Lori 47 in very cold MD

I have the exact same low pain when I put on pants and sometimes sit down and get up. I had a TAH/BSO on November 6. I think the pain is from stitches healing on the inside. My cervix was removed and I feel the pain is from the stitches. That is my thought. I see my doctor on Tuesday, I am going to ask him about the pain.
