Water, fruit and veg will help the bowels once a regular bowel habit is established. After my hyst I was terribly constipated. I was given glycerine suppositories in hospital which helped a little. I didn't have a proper bm until a week later. It was horrible as I was taking milk of magnesia and trying to eat sensibly. I had been very sick post op. Hard as I relied on ready meals which are hardly full of fibre. I eventually had a bm which was very difficult to pass. I have no experience of thyroid disease. However I have experienced an anal fissure which was treated under general anaesthetic. After the op I had to take fybogel and lactulose which loosen the bowel movement. It was quite unpleasant at the time but it did eventually heal. However I wouldn't self medicate without having a diagnosis of the problem from your doctor.

vettech, so sorry to hear your having troubles. WAH!

what worries me is I am having some BM troubles, too, even though I am still taking stool softener, eating prunes, drinking tons of water and eating lots of vegies. the worrisome part is that my doctor said i should not worry about pushing and that i can't undo anything going on inside. then i hear this from you... OY! is my doctor nuts?!?!
