Help still having bowel issues

Be warned if you are sensitive to "TMI". I am still having difficulty with bowel movements. Ever since surgery. I can not have one with out taking something. At first I was using prune juice. Then it was recommended to take stool softeners. So daily I take citrucel and 2 stool softeners and drink nearly a gallon of water. Some days that helps and some days it does not. If I go a whole day without going, as I did yesterday, I will usually take prune juice the next day, because I know if I take enough of that I will go eventually! I do not want to end up with those horribel constiaption cramps that had me nearly vomiting from the pain. My docotr did not tell me when I had to stop taking the stool softeners. So my questions are How long can one continue to take stool softeners and does anyone have any suggestion to help/resolve this?

Help still having bowel issues

I have the same problem. I have not been able to have a BM on my own since surgery either. I don't know for sure how long we should be taking stool softeners. I was planning on taking them until my 6 wk post op and then asking my DR what I should do from there. I know that probably wasn't very helpful. Maybe there are some other ladies that have more helpful information.

Believe it or not it still helps. Just to know someone else is having this problem, and has been on the softeners as long as I have makes me feel I am not alone. maybe somebody will have something that will help us both!!

Help still having bowel issues

I never used a stool softener in my life until after this surgery. Prune juice either. But boy don't I know it when it's time for juice. That's the worst pain!

I actually pray for loose stools...no pushing required.

I wonder too when my bowels will return to normal without any assistance. I'm 7 days post op (TAH), I think it's going to be awhile.

The things I took for granted

I could not go until I used a dulocax (sp) laxative suppository. I took that along with the stool softeners and was able to go very painfree. I did the suppository and then 10 minutes after that, I was able to go.

Sine then I have gone daily on my own by taking the stool softners and drinking water.

I know it's embarassing to use the suppositories but I would try it and see if you get back to order.

Help still having bowel issues

Ok, sisters. I read this thread yesterday and desperately wanted to post and help you, but I had to go to a son's basketball game, and then straight to his Vet's day program at school. Today I am suffering horribly, but feel compelled to post before going back to bed. Here's a little bit of my history:
Constipation has ruled my bowels nearly all my life. Then, at the age of 31, I developed bad heart burn. I also had been dealing w/hemorrhoids for 4 years or so. I got diarrhea constantly starting 3 years ago that no doc could figure out. I finally got diagnosed w/celiac disease this past March. Once I started the diet, the diarrhea stopped. BUT-
3 years of constant diarrhea gave me horrible hemorrhoids. I went in for my 2nd hemorrhoidectomy 1.5 weeks ago. My surgeon said that this is the regimen that everyone w/bowel issues should follow FOR LIFE!
Kirkland brand fiber caplets: at least 4 per day
Colace or generic colace one in am, one in pm
If still constipated, Milk of Magnesia 1 Oz per day till resolved
Drink at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces. If one weighs 150 pounds, drink 75 oz of water. One measuring cup = 8 oz. Walking 20 minutes a day minimum helps too. If everyone did this, no more hem problems. The fiber caps help diarrhea too. I can't eat wheat, oats, barley, rye spelt and many other grains. It makes it hard to get fiber from grains. Fruits and veggies are the only places to get good fiber from foods for me. I hope this helps. I would be willing to do ads for free to help anyone from going thru this. God bless you great women. You've been thru enough already! Don't make yourselves victims of this other torture.

Help still having bowel issues

Hello Idahonurse!

I am amzed that you are going out with all that has been going on. Good for you!!

Thanks for your info. I have a couple of questions. Where do you purchase Kirklands fiber caps. I have not seen them locally maybe I can get them online. Are you supposed to take the colace always or just when constipated? I did not have issues with this before the hyst, but ever since I can not go daily and I can not go at all without some type of assistance from Colace., and prune juice. It is really driving me crazy. I have been taking fiber but not the Kirklands. Thank you for your help. I hope you get some time to rest and continue to heal.
