2 uteruses

6 days post op & what a ride! Went in for TAH & then bladder repair. Doc opened me up & found 2 UTERUSES!!!! No wonder I get a few cramps! They were enlarged and full of endo. The ovaries had to go. The cervix stayed because it was too "*****" to remove... As he was getting ready to close me up he could only find 1 ureter. Turns out I only have 1 KIDNEY!
Talk about a shock! I was on the table 6-1/2 hours. Don't want to go back to the hospital again, but wonder about the bladder repair which I still need. Oh and I'm a newly diagnosed diabetic too. FUN TIMES....

Thanks for all the good thoughts! I had a CAT scan after surgery & it found that I was born with just one kidney. The doctor was afraid that he cut it out. At least the guy was honest with us. Talk about wanting to take care of things now! I had an ultrasound during first pregnancy & they discovered what they thought was a bicornate uterus, (heart shaped not u-shaped.) He said it was lucky to even have gotten pregnant in the first place. Ignorance is bliss sometimes!

I'm so sorry your surgery was complicated. That must've been quite a surprise to you, finding out about the 2 uteruses ~ uteri?! I'm sure that most of us found the problems with just one enough!

I can relate, actually, to the one kidney scenario ~ not personally, but my mother. She didn't find out until her 70s that she'd been born with only one kidney! As you say, ignorance is bliss sometimes. She's now 82 and still going strong.

Sending all good wishes and healing thoughts your way!

2 uteruses

Hi there!

I was born with a horseshoe kidney, meaning my kidneys were joined in a horseshoe shape. I had about 2-1/4 kidneys at birth. When I was 3-1/2, I had surgery to repair the defect, and I ended up with about 1-1/2 kidneys, and one ureter which is significantly shorter than the other.

The good news, of course, is that it's entirely possible to live with only one kidney, as you and I can attest to! And certainly, donor kidneys come from living patients. But I'm sure it must have come as a shock, especially with the bicornuate uterus. One thing I've learned is that ultrasound is far from an exact test... I was diagnosed with two fibroids three months before my surgery, but when I had my hysterectomy, it turned out there were more than 30 fibroids. Depending on the positioning of the uterus, it may or may not have been detectable upon ultrasound -- and I'm sure they weren't expecting just one kidney so they weren't looking for that, either.

The bladder repair may become more important being that you only have one ureter and kidney, but that's something for you and the doctors to work on. Hoping that your road to recovery is uncomplicated from here on out.

2 uteruses

After years of infertility problems, I was also told I had an bicornate uterus. I had a LSH in July and to my doctors surprise I had 2 uteruses. She showed my husband pictures from the OR after my surgery. We were blessed 13 years ago when our son was born, but he was born 7 weeks early.
I have to say, having the surgery was the best thing I have done in a long time. My life has totally changed not having the HORRIBLE PAIN each month. I didn't realize how much it controlled me until now.
