The worst BM EVER!!!!

Oh, dear.... I know you're not having any fun right now -- far from it.

I hope you're feeling better. It can take several weeks for the system to get back to normal.

I've never really had very good luck with stool softeners, or any sort of laxatives, either. They tend to either not work at all or simply cause lots of cramping and diarrhea, which is not exactly the best result.

Please don't stop eating, because you need to keep your strength up and you need to keep your system moving.

However, it might be best to practice a lower fiber diet for a while. I know that sounds counter-productive, because the conventional wisdom says to push fiber. But if it is possible to have "too much" bulk in your system, especially if you're not drinking enough water or if you weren't eating high fiber foods before your surgery.

A lower fiber diet stresses less raw fruits and veggies, or legumes (like kidney beans). Avoid foods like cheese that tend to bind you up, too.

For me, toast, applesauce, cooked cereal, rice, eggs, and such really help whilst I'm trying to get my system back on track. You know -- the normal "sick" foods you eat when you're getting over the flu or something similar.

Lots of water, tea and other clear liquids and as much walking as you can muster also help get things, um, moving properly.

And as difficult as this is (and believe me, I know -- I've been there ), straining only makes things worse. If you get to that point, then you risk all sorts of internal injury! I don't want to see you back in the for more repairs.

The worst BM EVER!!!!

I can concur, movement didnt happen for me until the 5th day... it was awful, I was not getting my stool softneners like the dr told them to give me, thank GOD I brought some MOM and took that on the sly after I found out the nurses were slipping on their job. It took a few days of MOM but finally made it. It was not easy... I have since gotten some MiraLax and its does work great! GOOD LUCK SISTERS!!

The worst BM EVER!!!!

oh my, I totally relate. I felt like I had birthed something with that first BM. I'm 2 weeks post surgery and still taking metamucil, though only a small dose once a day. i eat 2-3 prunes each day.

My first poo-poo was on Sunday or I would have called my doc. I told my hubby that I might have to go to the ER or get some tweezers. Bless his heart, he held my hand through the whole experience.

This pain was worse than any of my surgical pain.

After having such a hard time, I can't take any chances. I didn't take metamucil one day and then didn't go.

It's great to have such an open discussion where anything is OK and will be understood.

The worst BM EVER!!!!

OK ladies - so I got the miralax yesterday based on what I read here and it worked!! Today I had the most pain free BM so far. It wasn't perfect - a far cry from it - BUT it went quickly and I didn't feel like I was going to bust open!! Yea!! I see light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks to whoever suggested it.

The worst BM EVER!!!!

Hey,
I just read this whole post and I want to add my 2 pennies. My bm's have been so bad that I have been oooing and ahhing and whining and almost passing out on the loo from the pain. I used 3 enemas, one suppository, stool softeners and a laxative in the first 10 days. Nightmare!! When it actually comes out isn't the whole problem. I can feel it coming down the colon to the rectum. I felt it grating across something internally.

Here I am 15 days from surgery thinking I had it under control and I didn't go yesterday. So today I was back to whooping and hollering. My DH said I didn't yell as bad today. It probably is horrible to listen too.

I think I am going to try that miralax stuff.
