? about being able to urinate on my own...help!

I had a type 3 radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymph node dissection on Nov.12 2007.
I was in the hospital for 3 days which included surgery.
I had a catheter the whole time I was in the hospital and came home having to straight catheterize myself every 4 hours. (talk about no sleep and freaking out) I have not been able to urinate on my own yet. I've been doing those nice keigle exercises and can feel that I would be able to stop the flow of urine and let it go, the problem is ......I can't pee on my own. It just won't happen...I've been trying to relax etc...but I am wondering if this is normal. How long does it usually take to be able to void on your own after this surgery?? Has anyone out there had this problem? I don't want to be stuck doing this the rest of my life! I'm only 42!

All of this has come at me so fast. The diagnoses, second and third opinions and into surgery in the matter of 3 weeks. I'm still waiting on the pathology report on a tumor that was found that they felt was very aggressive and invasive. ( I go for my yearly exam on time) so this was
quite a shock.

Anyone out there with any advice I would love to hear from you!!!

Hi (((TulipRose)))
Welcome to Hystersisters! I'm sorry to hear you're having a struggle voiding. I had to use the straight cath for a couple of weeks too. It's not too uncommon for there to be so much swelling at first that you can't go on your own. For some it's longer than others.

I hope your dr is keeping a close watch on you with this. When do you see him/her again? Don't hesitate to call and ask questions if you continue to struggle with this. I found at first I had to sit and wait and finally it would come. Hopefully you'll soon find that you can begin voiding some on your own. You may need to use the straight cath for a little while until you know you're able to fully empty on your own. Try not to worry, it will come. I hope it won't be too long.

You have had a lot to deal with in such a short time. I hope your pathology reports come out good. If you have questions and need of support in this other area there is the Cancer Concerns forum where you may find others who are have dealt with some similar issues.

Please keep us posted on your progress. Make sure you're drinking lots of water and getting up to walk around as you feel up to it. I hope everything begins to get better for you soon.
's, Rita

Hi there: I actually came home with a foley catheter for 2 weeks following my surgery for cervical cancer. Like you, I was religious with my yearly exams and it was quite a shock to hear the diagnosis. After those 2 weeks with the catherter, I was able to void on my own. I hope that you get some relief soon!

Sending you hugs!
