venting: very bad day

OK,so called my ob/gyn this am because I have had the flu for the past 2 days and this am I woke up with a rash all over my back, neck, tummy, and it is starting to go on to my scalp. When I told her everything she said that she did not think that it had anything to do with the hyst and to see my family doc.I called to get a appt with my family doc and was told he was not in.When I to the secritary what was going on she found an opening with one of the other docs.I was seen by a PA who I have seen before and really like. She said that it looked like a drug reaction.when I told her what all i am on she said that it could be any of them.I told her that I was fine untill I was put on levaquin which I have been on before and the estrogen which I have never had.Since she did not really know what the rash was caused by she got another doc to come in and look at me. The doc that she got is one that I have had issues with before. When I saw him last i was in the hospital in april and he told me that there was nothing wrong with me and that I was just looking for drugs and that it was all in my head.(I didnt know that addhessions where in your head!)When he came in he looked at me and my chart and at one spot on my belly and said "It is the dilaudid you need to stop taking it."When I told him that I have been on the dilaudid for 3 weeks and not had a problem he told me that "You are not a doctor and I am and I said to stop taking it."By the time I left he had me in tears and had told me to stop taking all of my meds because that was the only way to find out for sure if it was drug related and if the rash did not go away by fri then it was a virus.I am so tired of being treated like crap because I am in pain.I just want my body to heal.I tried to get a hold of my ob/gyn but she is gone and won't be back untill monday.Well that is my day. Thanks for letting me vent.

Gosh Jenny,

I am so sorry you had to deal with that. It is so unfair! If you get worse I think you should go to the ER or an urgent care where you will get an automatic second opinion. The other idea I have is for you to google your meds and see which one has that symptom as a side effect. I solved my own medical mystery that way last June. I had been sent to a urologist for profuse blood in my urine. I want through many painful and icky tests and they coudn't find the answer. Well I decided to check my meds I take online myself and sure enough there it was listed as a rare but known side effect!!

Good Luck and big hugs!!!

Your doctor may have been correct but it sounds like his bedside manner leaves something to be desired.

Your pharmacist should also be able to run your meds through the computer to see if there are any drug interactions that could be causing this.

If it is a drug interaction or reaction, stopping all of them is probably the only thing you can do at this point. You do need to weigh the pros and cons of discontinuing your meds.

I called the PA that I saw today to beg her to atleast let me take the phenergen as I started to throw up again and she was so nice and said that she did not think that the phenergen was the problem since I have been on it off and on for the last 6months and told me to go ahead and take it.Thank God because If i throw up one more time I don't know what will happen my tummy hurts so bad!I would go to the ER but the same doctors that staff the clinic I go to staff the ER and I would more than likely see the same doc I did today.I guess I just felt like I got no where today since he did not even know if the rash is even related to the drugs that i am on or if it a virus.if it is a virus I need to know since I live with my mom and she works in a nursing home and if I can pass this on I need to tell her.I am allmost at the end of my rope!I hope the phenergen helps soon!check in later,

It's possible that you're developing a sensitivity to one of your meds... That happened to me with morphine. I had it after several surgeries without difficulty, but after my hyst I had a bad reaction to it. The nurses said I could be developing an allergic sensitivity to the med (it was really the only thing I was on at the time) and they noted in my chart that I was not to have morphine again.

I hope you have an alternative for the pain medication, though. I would have a hard time coping if the only way to identify a reaction would be to go without pain relief.

Hope you get some answers soon.

Well I have been off of all of my meds but the phenergen for the last 24hrs.The good news is that my rash is going away.the bad news is now we need to find out what one I am allergic to.I am now taking bactrim for an antibiotic and demerol for pain. Now I need to figure out if I am allergic to the estrace that I was on...not sure how they are going to do that.I hope all is well with all of sisters out there.

Hey there,
Just reading through your post, sounds like you've had a tough time. Just a side note that sometimes bactrim can cause bladder infections so just watch for that. It feels like a burning sensation when you pee. Tons of fluids to help flush that particular antibiotic through. It is a very common one because its not to expensive. Anyway take it easy and I'll be thinking of you

littlebrat-
You poor dear! It's bad enough, feeling lousy. but then to go through all THAT?? Google those meds(that was a good idea from starbgirl) and help the doctors along. It could save you alot of misery!
(I have done that before and it works!!)
Best wishes for improvement with everything!

I guess what really upset me was that the Dr was appauled that i was STILL on pain meds.He said that there was no reason that I should still need them at three weeks post op and that I was APPERNTLY hook on them and that he would have a talk with my ob/gyn about this.I call my ob/gyn and told her what he said and she said he could take a flying leap! That it was fine for me to still be taking pain meds and untill he can go through the surgery that I just had and not take anything for pain he could keep his mouth shut!she explained to me that I have been in chronic pain for a very long time and that it will take a while for the pain to go away.so that made me feel better. But is still erks me that he basicly told me that I was a drug seeker.I am on demerol now for pain and it is working well but now I am fighting contipation from it and nothing seems to be working.I am taking miralax, walking and drinking warm tea.hopefully something moves soon.the rash is not getting any worse and is getting lighter in color so hopefully we will figure this out soon. Thanks for letting me vent.

"she said that she did not think that it had anything to do with the hyst "

OKAY! I am so sick of hearing our ob/gyns, including mine, say that what we are going through has nothing to do with our hysterectomies!

I am SO sorry to hear you feeling so bad and not finding any help with your doctors. Maybe, as someone else recommended, you should go to the ER? It is a long holiday weekend and if you are not feeling well you shouldn't wait. You have been through enough and need to be as comfortable as possible at this time.

HUGS!
