Keep ovaries or not? (endo patient)

I am having a LAVH on Dec. 13th. I am not sure if I should keep my ovaries or not. I am 34 years old and I have endometerosis.
My OB doctor thinks I should keep them, but my regular doctor thinks I should have a total cause of the chance of the Endo. coming back. I am gonna be honest with ya all here, I am really worried about the weight gain with hormones as I have been struggling with an eating disorder for a long time. I know, my health should come first and it does thats why I am doing it, but I am still worried. Do any of you have any advice? Thanks So much!

Hi jehammer and

We're happy that you joined the Hystersisters community! There is a ton of solid information on the site, and the members have unlimited cyber-hugs to dispense to you at every stage of your journey to good health.

I had my surgery for different reasons than yours -- but I do know that the issue of keeping or removing ovaries for endo patients is quite complicated. The fact that two doctors have different opinions in your case must make it quite confusing.

For me, weight gain and loss after my oophorectomy depends on two factors: calories in (food and drink) versus calories out (physical exertion and exercise)... just like it was before my operation. If you ask a dietician you will get the same information: in human beings, weight gain and loss is based on calories in versus calories out. If I eat more calories in a day than I expend in physical activity, I gain weight. If I consume less calories per day than I burn off in physical activity, I lose weight. It's as simple as that.

I hope that, in partnership with your medical providers, you make the surgical decisions that wind up being the best ones for you.

Many s and Best Wishes,

There are so many sisters on there that will be able to share their stories with you and provide lots of support!

Myself, since I have Endo & PCOS, my dr. plans on removing my ovaries so it's a lesser chance of the endo coming back...even though there are no guarantees! This is definitely a huge decision and no matter how you look at it, it's very scary and overwhelming.....but finding this site will help you tremendously. Also, it wouldn't hurt to possibly get a 3 or 4th opinion.

I am waiting for my hyster next wk...and once I get cleared from the dr. I plan on starting up my work out routine and being more careful of what I eat because this is a life changing experience! I wish all the best!
