How long before you can drive short distances?

I had my hysterectomy (vaginal) on Nov 5th. Felt great. Then on Nov 16th had to be rushed back to the hospital for excessive bleeding. The stitches had to be repaired. So it is now 3 weeks after my original surgery and 1 week after the repair. I am not on pain meds and doing great. Is it safe to drive very short distances?

How long before you can drive short distances?

Hi - I didn't attempt to drive until 6 weeks post op - I had a TAH - however, I have noticed that some of the others on the site have driven much sooner - I'm in Ireland and most cars are not automatic - mine is - our roads are bad and the general level of driving extremely bad - that's probably why we're told not to try to drive before 6 weeks!!

This doesn't really answer your question! Sorry! I suppose, like everything, the more you rest the better - so the longer you can leave it the better - that's what I found!

I think that you should ask your dr. since you had compication. I also had a LAVH so did not have any outside stitches but4 bandaid cuts. My dr. said I could dr after 2 to 3 wks. I drove after 2 weeks. I think that only 1 wk after the repair might be to soon to dr. Take care and hope everything goes well with you.

How long before you can drive short distances?

I know you are probably right. I am just so bored and getting really depressed sitting here by myself all day. I wonder if riding in a car is better than driving it yourself?

Someone mentioned here that your car insurance may be invalidated if you're under doctor's orders not to drive. I have no sure information on that.

I didn't drive for about 5 weeks and then it was only a 2 minutes drive to the hairdressers. (Priorities, you understand.) My doctor had said no driving for 3 weeks and only then if I was able to brake properly in an emergency. She told me to try sitting int he car and simulating an emergency stop (moving foot from gas to brake pedal.) I was able to do that but what I found difficult was turning to look over my shoulder as I backed out of the driveway. It pulled my stomach muscles.

To be safe, I'd call the doc and ask. Just make sure you're off any narcotics.

Definately ask your dr. He knows what is going on w/YOUR body. We are all different here and have various docs.

How long before you can drive short distances?

I had a TAH, and My Dr. said I could drive as soon as I felt up to it. I drove at 10 days. I got tired. I think it was because of the getting in and out of the car and doing the errands. Driving was OK. I didn't start driving every day, at that point, only if I needed to.

How long before you can drive short distances?

At my two week checkup, my doctor said he'd prefer I wait six weeks but that he couldn't really stop me from driving. I drove at five weeks and that was just up the road to church. Even riding was uncomfortable for a few weeks so I wasn't in any hurry to drive!

Royalimages,
I agree with checking with the doc. I had an LAVH and found there is a difference between riding and driving. I feel the bumps of the road more while driving than riding. Plus I think you use your torso muscles more while driving than riding. My doc said I could drive between 1 and 2 weeks, but I didn't have any complications. I did help with the driving when we went out of town at 3 weeks post-op, but it was interstate driving with minimal stopping/starting and that was only a bit to give DH a break.
