Wound infection, and hot flash, cold sweats

Had surgey for tumor removal and total abdominal hysterectomy 10/29/07. They did a pubic bone to belly button incision, and lucky for me, all the tumors were benign. However, 7 days after surgery the wound infected, and to make a long and gross story short, I had to have the incision opened up at the bottom, and was on a couple weeks of antibiotics and now have home health care in daily to continue packing the open wound, and bandage change.

Anyone else have this experience ? How long does something like this really take to heal --- it already seems like it's been forever that I have an open wound....

And before surgery I was peri menopausal. A few hot flashes, a couple night sweats. But now, holy hot flash.... it's every 20 to 30 minutes, and I'm up all night long, either dying of the internal heat, or shivering in cold sweat. Does it level out a bit, or is this what it's going to be ?

I am having a similar experience. I had a total hysterectomy on Nov 7. I developed an incision infection. The Doctor had to open the incision at the bottom and put me on antibiotics. Luckily my Mom has been here to help with cleaning the hole. I go back to the Dr. tomorrow morning. There are times I just cry because this has become so frustrating. I feel fine except for this hole in my incision. I had to have a an ovary and tumor removed with an abdominal incision two years ago. I didn't have any of these problems.

I have had to fight with my HMO for the nursing care. They keep telling me to get a friend to come over to pack the wound, but come on now, how many friends does a 50 year old woman have that are free to come over and pack a wound that is basically in her crotch ? They suggested a colleague --- oh yeah, I'll just ask someone I work with to do that !!! NO !

How big and deep is your wound ?

The hole is about half an inch up and down. At first it was about a half an inch deep. It still drains everyday. My Mom says she can tell that it is not as deep. I stay on the antibioics until next Wednesday. My conern now is that the incision right above the hole feels spongy. Yesterday it felt more like a knot. I go to the Doctor tomorrow so trying not to worry about it.

I am lucky in that I have a friend that can come help me if my Mom has to go home. She recently had a hysterectomy and says she doesn't mind helping because I helped her. My Mom will have been here a month if she goes home next weekend. She has been amazing.

How long did the Dr. think it would take for the open wound to heal from the inside out?

My wound is about 7 cm long (3 and a half inches) and about 4 cm deep.

I have had the "crater" since November 7, and origionally they said 6 to 8 weeks to clear it up.

Have your doctor check for a "pocket" there could be a pocket of unhealed tissue above, or next to the open wound. I have a pocket at 12 oclock ( toward my head) that goes up about another 6 cm. They have to pack up there, to wick the infection drainage down and out.

I'm glad you have someone to help you. It must be nice to have that when you are still on the mend.

Keep in touch, let me know what the doc says.

I have had this happen in other surgeries. My first thought was , You better get checked for MRSA. Most docs dont check for it unless you ask for it. Did anyone take a culture of you infection B4 the antibiotics were taken? I got MRSA during my last surgery for my gallbladder. MRSA has become so nation wide.Get checked.

The ER did a culture. I insisted. Thanks.

My appt with the Dr. went well. She says the lower opening is healing and looks good. She had to open a very tiny hole above the first opening to drain some fluid. She put me on another round of antibiotics. The culture on the fluid that came from the first opening has not come back yet. I wondered about MRSA, but didn't get tested before the antibiotics.

I am grateful that I have my mom here to help me. She has been great.

I can't imagine that insurance would give you grief over home health care with the size of your incision opening.

I hope all goes well for you !!!

I just spent 2 hours on the phone with my hmo. It seems that even though the doctor ordered home health daily, the organization does not provide it. So the home health agency called my primary physician, (who hasn't seen me since before surgery) and got an ok for changing the type of dressing and packing.

I am insane over this. I'm not one to give in to emotions, but I am so upset over this.

The doctor ORDERED daily nursing care, but the hmo doesn't provide it. Does this make any sense ?! grrrr.
