Home from the castle

I just got home yesterday after an unexpected lengthened stay at the castle for 6 days.

Now about the shaving issue...I was out for that part. The worst was while I was waiting to be wheeled into surgery and my sis was with me. Now you must know that we are opposites in personality - me very shy, somewhat quiet, and she the life of the party, speaks whatever is on her mind...sometimes she forgets the discretion part. Anyway, I had confided with her that this was something we Hystersisters were concerned about (namely this one). Don't you know every nurse, unbelievably handsome resident, intern, etc. (they all could have easily starred on Grey's Anatomy), and every person coming into the room she popped the question. "My sister is concerned when the shaving will be taking place; before or after anesthesia?" After one of the gorgeous interns walked out I had to smack her and tell her to stop asking about my pubic hair!!
Anyway, I am very self conscious, but by the end of my castle stay practically anyone that wanted to have a look at my swelly belly vertical incision with my naked swollen pubic area (no wonder I was so cold!) needed only to ask. The doctor must have done an extraordinary job with the incision as I have no staples or sutures and when they rounded on me each morning I could hear the residents whispering "look at her incision." One by one they came by for a personal check of things.

So for those of you waiting, know that waiting is the hard part, patience is a virtue and God is in control.

Wouldn't it be better to bring one of your better disposable razors that you KNOW works well.. like a double blade Venus or Bic Soleil that they can use on you instead of a cheap-O single blade that's going to nick and cut and leave all kinds of razor burn? I'm thinking of brining in my 5 bladed razor that leaves NO razor burn and works great.. and duct-taping it on a leash to my arm so they can use it on me.. and that way they wont lose it. Scared to death of getting a razor burn THERE.. I've shaved there, and NEVER given myself one, or a nick or anything.

Hey Sojourner,

Sounds like you had a wonderful surgeon not to have any staples or sutures. I am going in for a LAVH but I have been warned that I could end up with an incision. I am having a hyster for endometriosis and for multiple fibroids. I am having all removed, ovaries, cervix, tubes and uterus. Although I am not looking forward to the actual surgery, I am looking forward to no more pain, fatigue, etc. Why did you have to have a hyster? I am glad your surgery went so well. How are you doing now that you are home?

I hope all continues to go well for you. I also believe that God is in control. Thank you for your wisdom. Please keep in touch with your progress.

Just to let you know I shaved two days prior. EVERYTHING!!!!! I was paranoid about them shving me with those razor blade things Doctor said I "shaved" him some time. Yes that was a dry joke but he thought it would be funny at the time . My doc is great. Shave away. I did. I guess it would be best to ask first since all docs are different but I just did it. Good luck ladies and best wishes. When you feel scared, find us. Look on post-op for a thread called "is ANYONE having a good recovery". I posted that and theres good stories on there. Be good to yourselves and pamper the

The nurse excused my family for the shaving. She used an electric razor. It wasn't too bad, but she had exact instructions on how much to cut or not. She said that I should keep my legs down and closed. (I had my knees bent.) She shaved what was showing in this position. The shaving was mostly to be able to take my bandage in place. Also, my incision is right at the top of my hair line.

Catheter - I don't know when it was put in.

There is a possibility of them cancelling your surgery due to increase in infection if you go in there freshly shaved. I had shaved myself before a heart catherdization and was told that I should not have done that.
For my hysterectomy, I was asleep when they did mine (and I did not know ahead of time they were going to do it). So like a_new_life suggests, talk to your DR.

Just one more Sister whose doctor said NOT to do the pre-op shave myself - for the same reason. If I knick myself, it increases the risk of infection. My doctor said that SHE will shave a small portion, if she feels that it's needed.

My doc actually said it was ok to do "pubic hair removal" at home before surgery. He told me that at my pre-op 2 days before surgery. I was surprised after all the posts I had read here about NOT doing it at home for fear of cancelling surgery.

I do have to share a funny story that I thought of when you mentioned embarrassing moments. My night nurse was a former student of mine! Which was all fine until she came to give me a suppository (routine for my doc to get things moving)!!! I said, "I was always really nice to you, wasn't I???"

I wasn't shaved at all, so my advise is to ask your doc. He may not be planning on doing it!
