Yeast and Other Infections

Just wanted to write to let others know in case they are having the same problems I did...

I had gone in for my 6-week checkup at which point my doctor determined I needed to have some silver nitrate on my vaginal cuff as one stitch hadn't healed as well as the others. Had that done and was walking to get some bloodwork and started feeling some burning inside - asked them and they told me that was normal.

Came home and noticed some spotting on my panties - called and they told me it was normal for a couple days. A couple days pass and the burning seems to be spreading but the spotting has gone away. A couple more days pass and I get a very thin, no odour, very light beige coloured discharge...not noticed on my panties but only when I bear down with a bowel movement (that type of thing)...only noticeable on the toilet not much at all. Called them up and they told me that was normal for a few days after my treatment. I mentioned that I had been on antibiotics for a suspected urinary tract infection and could this possibly be a yeast infection. I've never had a yeast infection that I can clearly remember...if I had one, I was in my early not prone to getting them to know the symptoms well. Looked online for the symptoms of one and it seemed that I would have had some odour or more discharge, etc., so I wasn't figuring I had one really.

Well, Thanksgiving comes and goes...burning doesn't. The discharge is still there - same amount, not much at all, no smell, etc., but the burning is really bad. I'm thinking...well, perhaps this is what thinning of my vaginal tissue feels like...just less moist, etc. (I had always been very moist down there.) Or, perhaps, as the nurse said, this is just normal following a silver nitrate treatment...yep, you got it - I called again and she told me that some discharge could be present for months after a hysterectomy and it was "all normal" and part of the healing process.

So, on Monday I go to my regular doctor for an unrelated problem - bring up the subject of my burning inside and he (as I do) feel that I should be seen by someone and it's probably not the silver nitrate anymore after 8 or 9 days.

I call them up and basically demand at this point someone check me out...yadda yadda yadda...and I threw in "my regular doctor states I should be seen" for good measure. So, after a few more phone calls that day I finally get them to book an appointment with a nurse practitioner the next day.

I go in and she's of the mindset as well that it's probably just vaginal irritation from the silver nitrate...swabbed me and sure enough I have a yeast infection. I had to take one Diflucan one day followed by another three days later. After I took the first one - I felt SOOOOOOOOO much better I couldn't begin to tell you. I took the second one yesterday and I'm hoping this is all behind me.

My point here is that even IF they keep telling you "that is normal"...and you don't have those textbook symptoms (as I surely didn't) - trust what your body and your brain says to you...if you feel inside that something just isn't right...darnit...demand to be SEEN IN PERSON and not just told "that's normal" over the I was for over a week. I would have felt a whole lot better a whole lot sooner I am sure had I took one of those pills earlier. That to me really could have been avoided.

i'm glad you got medication and youre feeling better. i never get all the textbook symptoms either. i self treated yeast infections that started in jan and i should have gone to the dr's right away. i ended up with bacterial infections and now i have an infection in my cervix. i just had to get it frozen last week. any out of the ordinary discharge, whether it smells or not, should be checked. i learned my lesson the hard way
