Blood in urine since August w/ work up pending

Hi all,

I had a LAVH with removal of my right ovary 10-3-07 as it was discovered when I went to the ER with abdominal pain that my ovary and uterus were enlarged on abdominal CT. I also had a mesh placed for stress incontinence.

My recovery has been good except for a kidney infection one week post op and recurrent urine tests which indicate trace to small amounts of blood. I have had 6-8 tests since August, all positive for small amount of blood.

Since this bleeding started before my surgery and since on the abdominal CT they also noticed mildly dilated renal (kidney) collecting system, I have to go to a urologist per my GYN to rule out kidney cancer.

I am an RN and relatively terrified. I am reassured as was she that there were not any tumors on the CT in August. I am also without pain in my flank or belly.

Anyone else out there with "microscopic hematuria" (ie. a few blood cells in the urine"? If so, what did you go through and what was the answer?

Thanks in advance!
Heidi

I did have that also. I had all the work up for it etc. This was last May, before my hyster. In any case they couldn't find anything and were prepared to have me come back every three months to continue to test and keep a close eye on it. Well I was reading a magazine and it mentioned if you have any new symptoms to check on meds your taking. So I got cuious and looked up my two BP meds. Sure enough listed as a rare side effect of Edecrin was hematuria. (Edicrin is a diuretic) I called my cardiologist and he also researched it and told me to go off it. The hematuria cleared up very quickly.

BTW - I had been on the Edecrin for almost 2 years and had only been having hematuria for a few months so that was strange but it did go away once I stopped the meds.

Do you take any you can deep dive check into?

Good Luck and my prayers are with you that it is nothing scary.

Hello Heidi

I'm sorry you are dealing with this and can understand your concern. Do you have frequent UTI's? Have they suggested you might have some type of obstructive uropathy or ureteral reflux or something?

I have had microscopic hematuria for over 20 years. Way back in the early 80's when it was first found, I had just an IVP and cystoscopy. Luckily, they didn't find any tumors, but they also didn't find a good reason for the hematuria. He said there as some inflammation, so he called it a "probable chronic trigonitis." I moved out of state right after that and (feeling reassured that it was a totally benign cause) never had another uro follow-up.

My GYN has not been comfortable with the diagnosis or with every u/a showing blood & my work-up being so outdated. He has been after me for 3 years to have another work-up and I keep promising I will, with good intentions.

My neurologist and GP did some lab work recently for another issue and found an elevated creatinine and low GFR, which indicate a potential kidney problem. Like you, I understand the significance of renal problems, so I (finally) made a uro appt. and will see him in January.

Researching the possibilities can be scary, so try not to think too much or get too ahead of yourself. I know sometimes that's easier said than done, though. I hope you do well with your work-up and get some good news. Please keep us posted.

Gentle s,
Beth

Hi Beth

I had an IVP for the same thing in 2001 that was negative and so never was concerned again until now. I will call the urologist tomorrow for an appointment and get another workup...
