Afraid to ask Dr. for a refill on pain meds

I had my TAH 3 weeks ago and they took everything. I had been suffering from pain for a long time. Last Wed. I called my doc to ask for a refill on my pain meds and he said no, that he wanted me to try just taking aleve. I was so embarrassed. I felt like he was wary of refilling my meds cuz he thinks I'm addicted or something. so I tried just taking aleve all weekend and although it helped somewhat I still feel like I need something stronger. the problem is I'm embarrassed to call and ask him again because he's making me feel like a junkie or something. I've been crying all morning about it. I don't have to have the meds I was on, just something stronger than aleve. Does anyone have any advice on what to say? Am I addicted or crazy for still feeling significant pain 3 weeks later? I'm so depressed about this.

Bailey- I would def call and talk to him or go by the office. If you are still in pain then he should be willing to give you more meds, you should NOT have to suffer. Maybe if you went in and talked to the nurse they would be more willing then to do it over the phone.

Don't suffer, you are not addicted, just in need of a stronger pain medication than Aleve. I am going to my 2 week check up tomorrow and plan to ask for more meds, even if he doesn't give me 40 pills, I would like to get at least 10. I hope you get some relief soon.

Afraid to ask Dr. for a refill on pain meds

I had to ask my MD for a refill and he called me back himself. I ask him to help me manage this pain. I also asked to explain my options and when he realized those options werent working he called me in a refill. I explained to him that I was unable to increase my activity level until the pain was relieved. Hope this helps.

I too asked my doctor for more and he said no. He is well aware that I do not take pills, but I do if I have to. The aleve just lessened it for me, but was better than nothing. I asked why I couldn't have it, and in my mind thought the same as you. He said that the vicodine can constipate some people and that he did not want me to be addicted. He suggested a heat pad and it did help for me. Please ask your doctor first, but I could only keep mine on for a very minimal time. I was actually in tears for a day or two because I needed something stronger than that. I kinow if I called back, the nurse would call something in, but I did not want to feel like a junkie. I am so glad this sight is here because I now, know I am not the only one. It is nice to have others to share with who have been through it.

I'd definitely call your doc back (or probably even better - - - go in person) and describe what pain relief measures you've taken and what if any relief these measures have given you. All narcotic pain meds constipate us, so we just have to balance it with lots of fiber, water, stool softener, laxatives, etc. I think if you explain that you can neither engage in light activities nor sleep well (both of which are vital to your recovery) due to pain, he'll hopefully understand. There are so many options when it comes to pain meds that if he's worried you'll become addicted, he can switch you to a drug with a different base drug. Many narcotics are opiates and, thus, related to heroin, but I know there are others that are not in the opiate family. Everyone who's responded above is correct in that you should not have to suffer through your recovery. Hang in there and let us know how things go with the doc. Sending you a giant hug.

Bailey1007, in addition to giving your doc your personal facts on your attempts at pain relief, it might be good to discuss with him the "facts" about pain pill addiction and the absence of the common factors in your case. Here's a good article I found that should help. http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/PN/00056.html
Good luck.

the worst thing he can do is tell you no...call and speak to his nurse or to him if you need them. have you tried 800mg of motrin?
