How long on pain meds?

I'm a week post-op today and still taking Vicodin every six hours. Today I tried substituting a dose of Vicodin with three Ibuprofin but it just wasn't strong enough. I find myself counting my Vicodin to see how long they will last and I worry about having to ask the doctor for more. She sent me home with 60 and I'm down to about 25. How long is normal to be on them? I had LSH so I thought I'd be down to Ibuprofin by now.

How long on pain meds?

I think this is a "your mileage may vary" type of thing - but it seems like people are averaging anywhere between 1 to 3 weeks, that I've seen.

I was taking Percocet for a week, and have just gone a step down to Darvocet. Unfortunately, I've felt miserable all day and the Darvocet wasn't enough, so I had to piggyback Motrin. May end up calling the doctor on Monday for a refill of the Percocet if it continues to seem like the Darvocet isn't strong enough.

How long on pain meds?

It varies from person to person. I took the oxycontins, my dr gave me, faithfully every 4 hours for 3 days after returning home. After that I tried to only take them when I needed them. Usually because I did something stupid. But I have a very high pain threshold. It comes in handy, considering I also have a higher pain medication threshold, not much works.
Check with your Dr. for reason why you are still in such pain.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

How long on pain meds?

I am 2 weeks post op and just today filled my 3rd script of Vicodan. Mostly for this Gawd awful back pain I am experiencing. I have a low pain threshold and a high pain med tolerance so it's a tough one to judge by me.

How long on pain meds?

Jskell911 - I also have a low tolerance for pain and a high tolerance for pain meds so it's good to know I'm not alone. Thanks, everyone, for your advice. I won't worry so much about still being on Vicodin after one week now.

How long on pain meds?

I agree about the mileage, your pain tolerance, and your pain MED tolerance. I have an extremely HIGH pain threshhold, and am severely sensitive to narcotics. I had a TVH and came home from the hosptial on 200mg of plain old Advil. This is also what I took in the hospital while in recovery from my emergency abdominal surgery three weeks after my hyster.

That said, have you tried going without your pain meds to evaluate your pain? You mentioned that you're taking your pills faithfully every six hours. I understand not wanting your pain to get out in front of you, so I'm just asking. Also, you didn't mention what kind of surgery you had, which really makes a difference. If you use up all your pain meds and you're still having pain that requires something on the scale of Vicodin, it's likely your doc will have you back in the office to see if perhaps you're developing complications.

Best of luck to you hon, and I hope the pain starts to subside for you soon!

How long on pain meds?

everyones pain threshold is different and as long as youre in pain, try to get as much relief as possible with meds. are you walking every day? it really helps to move a lot, long or short walks...it doesnt matter as long as you move. you should see a big difference in the next week or so with your recovery...good luck

How long on pain meds?

I was given 30 percocets with the directions to take 1 to 2 every 4 to 6 hours. I have ended up taking 1 evert 3.5 hrs to keep the pain under control and only having to take two at once this morning when I hit a 9 on the pain scale. Then again, she only prescribed 30 vicoden after a D&c so I think thats her "staple" number to use. I am hoping my doctor will give me more if I call on Monday. The comlications I have been having should be enough to warrent more pain medicine but who knows how the doctor feels about rxing narcotics.
Wel, its back to be for me. I am absolutly drained.

How long on pain meds?

I had a TAH and ran out of Percocet right before my two week checkup. My doctor called in Lortab, and I took it for about a week and then didn't need it anymore.
