Is weight loss possible on HRT with both ovaries removed?

My surgery is at the end of the month and I'm worrying about the difficulty of weight loss after my ovaries are removed and I begin HRT.

I have suffered with ovarian cysts and symptoms of failure for at least the last couple of years. I'm already almost 20 lbs. heavier than I was last year at this time and I'm scared about either gaining more weight or it being really difficult to lose weight following surgery.

I've read as many posts as I could find about weight loss but I'm unsure how many who have lost weight have had both ovaries removed and were also on HRT.

I'm hoping that the surgery will actually help with weight loss since my hormones are so out of whack as it is. I just thought I'd ask if anyone has actually lost weight by having their ovaries removed and getting on HRT and if so did they find weight loss easier or more difficult?

Also, let me know if you've gained weight or stayed the same after the surgery. I need to prepare myself mentally for all possibilities so I won't keep feeling like...

Is weight loss possible on HRT with both ovaries removed?

I lost weight after my surgery, while being on HRT. I don't find it any more difficult than I did before the surgery. My issues are more mental than physical. If I do the right things, I lose weight. I just don't always do the right things.

But I have definitely not gained any weight due to the HRT, and I am able to lose when I put my mind to it. If I gain, it is because of laziness and too much ice cream, and it doesn't happen while I am eating well and exercising regularly.

I also had wacked-out hormones pre-op, and everything to do with my body, including losing weight, makes more sense now.

Ditto what Julie said. I probably felt more bloated pre-surgery with all the pain, cramping and pain meds. I don't feel any "different" now, although I do think a couple of the hrts I've tried have made me feel a little more water weight. My clothes still fit the same (and sometimes better, because I'm more stable hormonally). I, too, like the ice cream and french fries!

Don't let that worry keep you from feeling good otherwise. It's all in how we take care of ourselves.
All the best

While initially I could not lose weight, I did eventually lose those extra pounds I had put on after the hyst. Eight years later I am still a size 4. Everyone is different, some lose weight immediately, for others it can take some time and patience. It is all about balance and how the body reacts to surgical menopause. Here's two interesting articles about this issue:

Weight and Menopause

Thank you all so much!

The articles were very helpful as well as reading the reassuring responses.

It helps knowing that eventually I'm going to feel good again.

I'm one of the ones that has gained weight (about 12 lbs.) since the surgery, but I also had a difficult time with surgical menopause (with emotions and achieving hormonal balance). But I took Lupron, and I've heard that that can cause weight gain, too.

I am finally feeling pretty good, and I've just started an exercise program. I have high hopes that I will start getting this added weight off. I do find that I have to eat less than I used to, however.
